The American Association of Theological Schools regards the following as a minimum list of fields of study which which it is desirable that a student should have acquaintance before beginning study in a seminary. In some cases, deficiencies may be made up after a student has begun work in a theological school.

In preparation for seminary education, a student should secure a broad cultural background which will provide the essential foundation for the professional studies of a minister. English, history, philosophy or humanities are suggested as areas of concentration. major fields in the first two areas are offered at A&M-Commerce, and courses meeting the usual requirements in the other two areas should be included in the student's degree plan. Majors in sociology, speech, psychology and other areas are approved by seminaries. Seminaries recommend that special attention be given to English, composition and literature as it is vitally important that the minister be able to use the English language effectively. They also consider as important prerequisites to seminary study the ability to think clearly and read at least one foreign language. Courses in Bible are recommended as seminaries consider a thorough knowledge of its content as indispensable, together with an introduction to the major religious traditions.

Pre-theological students, as well as those planning to study in the field of religious education in a seminary, are expected to seek academic advisement from members of the Pre-Theological Committee on major and minor fields of study and to continue that association after they have been referred to an academic advisor in their major field. Additional information may be secured in the catalog of the seminary the student expects to attend and from the directors of the various religious groups on campus.
