*Selected courses from the British Studies program may be transferred to satisfy University Studies requirements in the categories of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Humanities, and Visual and Performing Arts.

Capstone courses, required of and open only to juniors and seniors, are intended to help students develop more sophisticated reasoning skills. The skills include (but are not limited to) increased awareness of and ability to comprehend complexity, contextually relative thinking, integration and synthesis of the entire undergraduate experience, and the ability to withhold judgment while gathering relevant information.

Capstone courses will archive two fundamental objectives. First, a capstone will look outward, providing a student a broader view than is the normal focus of upper-division courses. Second, a capstone course will acquaint students with disciplines outside their own, giving them a perspective that will transcend their major and minor fields. Students are to use capstone courses to add breadth, not depth, to their formal academic experience. Students are encouraged to take capstones outside their major.

Except for selected courses taught through the University of Southern Mississippi in the British, Caribbean and Mexican Studies programs, capstone courses may not be transferred to satisfy University Studies requirements.
