The Department of Literature and Languages is a merger of English,
linguistics, foreign languages, and philosophy, and affords the
opportunities to the student for academic enrichment through diverse
offerings and an international faculty.
Degrees awarded
are the Bachelor of Arts in English and Spanish; the Master of Arts
and Master of Science degrees in English; the Master of Arts in
Spanish; and the Ph.D. in English.
Courses in the
Department of Literature and Languages improve the reading, writing
and analytical skills of students, offer insight into the use and
structure of languages, develop an understanding and appreciate
of literature, and explore film as an art form. The programs offered
for non-teaching majors are designed to prepare students to enter
graduate study, or as basic preparation for professions such as
law, publishing, ministry, broadcasting, government, advertising,
free-lance writing, creative writing and business. The programs
prepare students to write effectively, to think and read critically
and analytically, and to understand cultural and social differences.
