The STARLAB is designed to be used in many different locations for many
different purposes. It fits in a 25 x 25 foot area and is 10 feet
high. The STARLAB takes about 20 minutes to set up and comes in four
different boxes which easily fit in the back of a mini van. The dome
is laid out on the floor and the fan is plugged in and turned on.
The dome inflates in just over 3 minutes (see short video on right).
The interior of the dome is large enough to accommodate a class of
25 students who sit on the floor around the edge of the dome. The
projector and cases are then put in the middle of the dome and adjusted
to show the stars or if a different cylinder is used the projector
can display information about the planets, Milky Way Galaxy, constellation
outlines, or constellations of the Greeks.
To see the STARLAB in
use click on each of the pictures on the right to see short videos.
The last two videos were shot in the near darkness inside the dome
so they only give a representation of the view. The students will
get a much clearer view than what can be reproduced by a video with
low light conditions inside the dome.
TEACHERS
Teachers can schedule a STARLAB program by contacting
the planetarium. The programs last approximately 30 minutes. We are
currently presenting two programs, one on the night sky and another
on the planets of the solar system. The following Microsoft Word document
gives more information about the portable planetarium, the requirements
for its use, descriptions of current shows and a registration form
to schedule a showing.
Note: The STARLAB is unavailable in April and May due to conflicts with the Planetarium fieldtrip schedule. We recommend scheduling early.
