Signs of times both old and new

Special displays and banners, above and right, set the campus stage for “Homecoming 2003: Remember the Past ... Live the Future.” Below, old friends gather during a morning reception to enjoy a little of the first half of that Homecoming theme.

Bonfire ignites spirit

Before the fire, top, there is the round the-clock guarding of the woodstack, above, by fraternities. At right, students enjoy the sight standing up, sitting down, and taking calls.

It’s a girl thing

At left, Dr. Joe Webber goes to great lash lengths to raise money for Hunt County Clothe-a-Child and the Mayo Scholarship Fund. Above, sorority sisters at the Spirit Rally show their support for the women’s soccer team.

Gold Blazer Gary!

As A&M-Commerce Alumni Association president, Gary Finney did what few would be willing to do. He spoke at and sat through up to 12 University graduation ceremonies a year, he routinely drove the distance from his home in Garland, Texas, to Alumni Association meetings, and he devoted countless volunteer hours to A&MCommerce—including service as Association president from 1999 to 2002.

The Gold Blazer Award is given by the Alumni Association to someone who has given noteworthy time and service to the Association or University. Alumni Relations Director Kayla Price said that Finney has always had a positive attitude “no matter how daunting the task.”

“Gary is so deserving of the Gold Blazer Award,” she said. “He loves this University and has proven his devotion through countless hours of volunteer service.”

When away from A&M-Commerce, Gary is manager of Human Resources for McKesson Corporation, a large supply management and healthcare technology company.

In addition to his work with the Alumni Association, he serves on the Board of Directors for Dallas/Fort Worth Inroads, Dallas/Fort Worth Diversity Council, and the National Association of African-Americans in Human Resources. He is also chairman of the Board of Deacons at First Baptist Church in Hamilton Park and assistant superintendent of the Sunday School Department.
