Former Students

Dr. Kenneth A. Bolin (Former Student) was recently appointed assistant professor of public health sciences at Baylor College of Dentistry. In addition, he continues his responsibilities as clinic director of the James and Louise Addison Kiwanis Dental Center in Dallas.

Arthur James (Former Student) (aka King Arthur) is operations supervisor for Conoco in Lake Charles, LA. He was All-America running back in the late 60s.

CORRECTION: Dean Tully passed away on May 8, 2001. He is the son of the late Darrell D. Tully (BS ’39, MS ’50). Dean did not attend A&M-Commerce.

Louie Price Gregg (BS ’33, MA ’48)—10-01. She taught school in Hunt, Red River and Cherokee counties, ending her career in San Marcos where she taught more than 30 years.

Margaret Ann Moore (BA ’37)—10-3-01. She taught in Belfalls, Vinson and Marlin, retiring from French High School in Beaumont.

Evelyn Bailey Black (BS ’38)—10-19-01. She was a retired junior high English teacher with the Dallas ISD.

Von Rhea Beane (BA ’39)—09-22-01. He was a teacher, coach and administrator, and later served as the first regional service director for TEA.

Christine Northam Pope (BA ’39, MED ’52)—09-29-01. She retired in 1979 as teacher with the Marshall public schools.

Ruth Bounds Harris (BS ’40)—05-31-01. She retired in the early 1970s from Texas Department of Corrections Wyndham School District, and later helped operate Fooshee Antique Shop in Edgewood.

William La Clair “Bill” Smith (BS ’44)—09-03-01. In 1966, he joined Sheegog Printing Co. Inc., where he became partner in ownership in 1973, retiring in 2000.

Johnnie L. James (BS ’47)—10-03-01. He served as personnel and safety director for Texas Bitulithic Co. for 45 years.

John William Hanson (BS ’49, MED ’55)—09-01. He spent his 30-year education career in the Ferris, Dallas, Wilmer-Hutchins and Mesquite school districts.

Ruby Legate (MA ’49)—05-27-01. She retired from teaching in May 1971 after 45 years of service.

Johnnie R. Miller (BS ’49, MS ’71)—11-9-01. She retired in 1979 as a teacher for the McKinney ISD after 22 years of service.

Nola Mae Miller (BS ’49)—09-13-01. She was a retired second-grade teacher for Hooks ISD.

Hubert Leon Higginbotham (BS ’50, MED ’52)—10-11-01. He taught at Robert E. Lee High School in Baytown from 1954 until his retirement in 1985.

Joe Morgan (MED ’51)—09-07-01. He was retired assistant superintendent and business manager for the DeSoto ISD.

Madyelene Clyde Blacketer Pritchett (MED ’51)—05-31-01. She was an elementary school teacher for 48 years.

Billy Glenn Robinson (MED ’51)—06-15-01. He was a retired teacher, coach and principal for 40 years.

Raymond F. Butts (BS ’52)—9-11-01. He was a retired United Methodist minister, serving various churches in the North Texas Conference for 38 years.

Bina Lu Barnett Hawkins (BS ’52)—9-17-01. She taught in Cedar Hill, Mineola, Lindale, Talco and Desoto. After retiring, she taught at Tyler Jr. College.

Joseph Wayne Maples (BS ’52)—9-27-01. He was manager of the ARA Food Services at A&M-Commerce until his retirement and was also chaplain at Presbyterian Hospital of Greenville.

Madeline Cox Anderson (MED ’53)—10-4-01. She was a retired teacher, having taught in Red Rock, Carpenter’s Bluff and Denison.

Kenneth Wayne Robertson (BS ’58, MED ’62)—10-24-01. He taught at several schools, including Kilgore High School, where he continued to substitute teach after he retired.

Charles Emerson Wasson (BS ’58, MED ’63)—10-14-01. He taught school seven years and retired in 1995 from Texas Rehabilitation Commission after 28 years of service.

Frat Edward Davis, Jr. (BS ’59)—8-26-01. He had retired in August 2001 from MCI World Com where he had served as a curriculum developer and instructor since 1992.

(MED ’59)—10-16-01. A retired teacher, she taught in Van Alstyne, Melissa and Palmer for many years.

Clyde Roy Harris (BS ’59)—8-29-01. He was very successful in the oil business as a landman, forming the partnership of Thomas and Harris as landmen consultants. He later expanded into western art and real estate investments.

H. Wayne Bennett (BS ’60)—11-3-01. His career began with Temco Aircraft Corp. of Greenville in 1960, and continued through company changes of Ling-Temco-Vought, Inc.and E-Systems, Inc., retiring in 1991 as a structural engineering manager.

Joe Wayne Mays (BS ’61)—9-10-01. He taught and coached for several years, then began a career as an auctioneer.

Mitzi Myers (BA ’61, MA ’62)—11-5-01. An internationally known authority on children’s literature, she wrote more than 75 scholarly articles and book reviews. The longtime UCLA lecturer edited anthologies of children’s literature and contributed entries on children’s literature to the Encyclopedia Americana and the Cambridge Companion to Children’s Literature. Although associated for more than 20 years with UCLA’s English Department and writing programs, she also taught writing at Scripps College, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Long Beach, Chapman University, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State San Bernardino and UC Santa Barbara.

Johnnye Louis Rainbolt (BS ’61)—7-4-99. He retired in 1993 as senior manager of support services at E-Systems, Inc., Greenville, TX. The Greenville Oak Creek Country Club held their yearly tournament in August 2001 in his memory, raising over $7,000 for the American Cancer Society.

Bob Bowman Rodgers (BS ’64, MS ‘72)—6-8-01. He was teacher and assistant principal of Terrell ISD, and in 1996 became principal of Wills Point Intermediate School, retiring May 31, 2001.

Wanda Rutherford Rhodes (BS ’65, MED ’80)—9-18-01. She taught in the Paris ISD for 26 years, retiring in 1991.

Elizabeth Carr Rutherford (MS ’68)—6-17-01. She taught school at Booker T. Washington, Mt. Pleasant, TX, retiring after 47 years of service.

Doris “Lynn” Stempel-Mathey (MS ’70)—6-13-01. She worked in the dyslexia laboratory at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, Dallas, and in 1985 co-authored The Children’s Handwriting Evaluation Scale: A New Diagnostic Tool, which is widely used to test the rate and quality of handwriting.

Ret. Major Wehland “Mike” Garnet Steenken (MA ’72)—6-15-01. He had a long Army career, including two tours in Vietnam. He was a hospital administrator for the Army and in private life after he retired from the service.

Dr. Charles Jackson (EDD ’73)—10-27-01. He was founder and president of the Interregional Athletic Conference at several colleges in Texas and Arkansas.

James “Jimmy” Russell Stansell (BS ’73)—7-30-01. He was previously employed by A&M-Commerce Police Department and later as computer programmer for Commerce ISD. He had recently retired from Computer Associates, Inc., where he was a customer support technician since 1986.

Melba Joyce Hunt Fritz (MS ’76)—10-26-01. She began her nursing career at Baylor Hospital in Dallas and was a school nurse and teacher in health education. She was a pharmaceutical sales representative and became a licensed certified case manager for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas.

Jimmy D. Milton (BS ’77)—7-13-01. He had a 20-plus year career with Raytheon.

Conna Bonner Whitecotton (MED ’78)—10-24-01. She taught school several years, served as counselor in the Corsicana ISD, and became an educational diagnostician where she worked for the bi-county coop and the Corsicana Residential Treatment Center.

Elizabeth L. “Betty” Towery (BS ’79)—9-7-01. She worked for various hospitals and retired from the Grayson County Health Dept. as director of nursing in 1985.

Jimmy Joe Young (BS ’79)—8-26-01. He taught history and coached at Chico, Yantis, Detroit and Prairiland high schools during his career.

George W. Fudgen (MS ’81)—9-1-01. He was a seventh- and eighth-grade physical science teacher at O. W. Holmes Middle School and Classical Academy, Dallas.

Margaret “Peggy” Stalter (BS ’81)—8-28-01. She served the Richardson ISD as nurse for 20 years and Lake Highlands High School for 15 years.

Jana L. Curry (BS ’82)—8-24-01. She taught in Farmersville and Greenville schools.
Nancy Jenkins Gilreath (BA ’83, MS ’98)—9-30-01. She was a schoolteacher for 18 years and a principal at A. C. New Middle School in Mesquite.

Darius Todd Baszile (BBA ’86)—10-16-01. He was a computer data entry specialist, working for companies in Atlanta, GA and Houston. He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Jane Anne McAlister Flook (BS ’87)—9-21-01. She worked in commercial property management, mostly with Fults Management in Dallas, until 1994. She was a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority.

William K. “Bill” Gruver (BS ’92)—9-25-01. He was a security manager for Lockheed Martin with 20 years of service.
Stephen McChord Neilson (BBA ’93, MBA ’95)—10-20-01. He worked as a substitute teacher.

Patricia “Patty” Parker Cuellar (Former Student)—10-26-01. She was a teacher of gifted and talented students at John H. Reagan Elementary in west Oak Cliff in Dallas.

Max McAlister (Former Student)—10-5-01. He was a police officer in Klamath Falls and Springfield, OR and served in the public school system as a coach for 32 years, retiring from Hempstead High School.

Dorothy “Dot” Raper (Former Student)—9-26-01. She was an LVN for many years and worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Leisure Lodge and Pleasant Grove Nursing Homes and L. P. McCuistion Hospital, retiring in 1983.

Jane Skidmore Rowe (Former Student)—05-01. She was a Kalir during the 1950s and resided in Healdsburg, CA, where she helped operate the family business, Pezzi-King Winery.

James C. Tyler, Jr. (Former Student)—8-19-01. He was a lifelong resident of Dallas, where he was employed, and a longtime member of the Dallas Cowboy’s Chain Gang.

Lloyd C. Wilhoite (Former Student)—10-20-01. He was employed by LTV and Lockheed-Martin in the missile division for 28 years, retiring in 1995.
