Keith Boles (BS ’87, MED ’92) was named superintendent of the Commerce ISD effective July 1. He was formerly the superintendent of the Rosebud-Lott ISD.

Dr. Lucile Estell (EDD 88) recently received the Citizen of the Year Award at the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce annual banquet in Rockdale, TX. She retired to Rockdale after a 48-year career as a teacher and administrator.

Kia Jane Richmond (BA ’89, MA ’97) earned her Ph.D. in English Studies from Illinois State University in May 2001. She has accepted a position as an assistant professor of English, Secondary Education, at Northern Michigan University. She and her husband, David Neumann, reside in Marquette, MI, located on the shores of Lake Superior, and look forward to becoming “Yoopers” (resident of Michigan’s U.P.).


1990-2001

Rusty Fox (MS ’91) returned to Texas to take the position of dean of student development and educational services, the chief student affairs officer, with Tarrant County College Southeast Campus. He was elected in 2001 to the Board of Directors for the National Academic Advising Association, serving as chair of the Two-Year College Commission, and was recently named to the faculty (one of fifteen chosen nationally) of the ACT/NACADA Advising Summer Institute.

The Moore Family

Darron Todd Moore (BS ’91), Director of Creative Services at Texas A&M University Commerce, and his wife, Critical Care RN Amy Marie Moore (BS ‘93), are the proud parents of their second child, Duncan Alexander, born May 10. The little boy plans to join his sister, Anna-Grace, on the first manned mission to Mars. The Moores live in Caddo Mills, TX with their dog Charlie and cat Ely.

Paul Berry (BS ’92) is an international director for Airgroup Express. He is married to Amy Bouck Berry (BS ’93, MS ’97). She is a part-time counselor in Flower Mound, TX. They have two children, Katherine Elizabeth “Katy Beth”, born on September 19, 2000 and Landon, born on September 11, 1997. They reside in Flower Mound.

The Hunter Family

Dr. Steve Hunter (MS ’92, EDD ’95) is serving as a missionary for the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. He and his family serve in the role as “Member Care Consultant” for 25 countries in Central, Southern, Eastern Europe and all of Russia. They live in Prague, Czech Republic.

Cary Barnett (BS ’93) assumed duties in March 2001 as a trooper with the enforcement division of the Department of Public Safety’s Highway Patrol at the Mount Vernon Center.

Tammy Murley (BSIS ’93) married Joshuah Hitchcock on March 10, 2001 in Van Alstyne, TX. She is employed by Royse City Elementary School, Royse City, TX.

Cathy Spangler (BSIS ’93) recently received her Master Reading Teacher Certification. She has been employed at the Greenville ISD since 1994 as a Title One reading teacher at Carver Elementary. She is also a trained reading recovery teacher, a mentor in the TX Bess program, and a certified ESL teacher.

Dr. Darrell G. Floyd (EDD ’95) is superintendent of the Stephenville ISD. His wife, Cheryl Floyd, is superintendent of the Bluff Dale ISD. They have a son, Tyler, seven years old, and a daughter, Brittany, six.

Dr. Hong (Carol) Yin Sun (MS ’95, EDD ’97) has published a book, Educational Technology Specialist—A Concise Handbook and Working Model for Training Effectiveness. She is now the computer user support specialist at Computer and Network Services, Muskingum College, OH.

Luis Camacho (BS ’97) recently took second place in the category of Reporter at the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters Awards Banquet on April 21. He is news director at KETR 88.9 at A&M-Commerce.

Lee Gill (BS ’98, MS ’01) was recently employed as a counselor at Northeast Texas Community College in Mount Pleasant.

Melissa Majka (BS ’98) married Clint Nivens on October 7, 2000. She is a middle school English teacher in Alvord, TX.

Richard Pierce (MED ’98) is computer instructor at Bland High School and recently presented, with the assistance of Bland High School junior Cody Watkins, “Documenting Student Achievement Using Online Portfolios” at the Tech Prep/High Schools That Work state conference in Austin on March 20.

Jimmy D. Speed (BSCJ ’98) is currently employed with the law firm of Cooper and Scully, P.C., in Sherman and was recently accepted at the University of Tulsa School of Law.

Molly Marie Thompson (BS ’98) married Brad Allen Wolf on March 12 in Las Vegas. She is employed by Collin County Juvenile Detention in McKinney. The couple will reside in Sherman.

Christina L. Carson (BS ’99), a former member of the Theta Nu Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, received her master’s degree in health education and health promotion in May 2001. She is currently a teacher in the Houston ISD and is planning a continued career in community and public health at the state and county level.

Charles Bartos (BS ’00) recently won first place in the category of Best Computer Image: College and University, in the Photo Imaging Education Association International Contest. This was the sixth consecutive year for A&M-Commerce to win a top award in the contest.

John Heath (BA ’00) is assistant sports announcer with Scott Garner at KETR-FM 88.9 on the A&M-Commerce campus. The team won first place for the second consecutive year in the category of Sports Play-by-Play at the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters Awards Banquet on April 21.

David E. Johnson (MED ’00) teaches and coaches seventh- and eighth-grade in Mesquite. He is married to Robin Johnson (BSIS ’00) who teaches third-grade in Mesquite. They announce the birth of Caleb Westlee Johnson on February 27, 2001. He weighed 7 lbs., 15 oz. and was 20’’inches long.

H. Neil Matkin (EDD ’00) was recently chosen as chief administrative officer of the Illinois Century Network, a high-speed telecommunications network providing access to data, video, and audio communication in schools, libraries, colleges, universities, museums, and municipal government. For the past 18 months he served as co-director of the network, and had served as senior associate director for information services since 1997 at the Illinois Board of Higher Education.
Jeffrey Lee Settle (BS ’00) has been employed as the director of bands for 2001-2002 at the Union Hill (TX) ISD.

Karen Barton (MS ’01) is a sixth-grade school counselor at Bowie Middle School in Irving. Prior to counseling, she taught eighth-grade algebra for three years at Bowie Middle School.

Brandi Michelle Burney (BS ’01) is employed as a community support specialist with Adapt of Texas in Sulphur Springs.

Brad Kellar recently took first place in the category of Documentary or Special Series at the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters Awards Banquet on April 21. He is Greenville correspondent for KETR 88.9 at A&M-Commerce.


In Memory


Eleanor Giddens (BS ’32, MED ’51) passed away on April 15, 2001 in Alvarado. She taught third grade in Ector, Bono, Lone Willow and Alvarado, Texas public schools. She also served in the U.S. Army during 1944-45 and was a member of the Veterans Womens Army Corp.

Lorene Williamson Gregory (BA ’32, MED ’54) passed away on April 22, 2001 in Seattle, WA. She began her teaching career in Dike, TX at age 16 and taught in various schools until she retired from the Encinatas (CA) School District.

Ruby J. Miller (BS ’32, MS ’48) died March 2, 2001. She was aneducator in Dallas, Delta, Hopkins and Van Zandt Counties.

Pauline Julian Childers (BA ’33, MED ’61) died March 4, 2001 at her home in Noble, TX. She began her teaching career in Oklahoma schools in 1929. Her long relationship with the Roxton ISD began in 1946, where she retired in 1978.

Marvin Coffey (BS ’35) passed away on May 9, 2001. He was a member of the ETSU Football Hall of Fame, was a Navy veteran of World War II and was a rancher.

Gwendalyn Allard Waller (BA ’35) passed away on March 31, 2001. She taught high school English for thirty-four years in Garland.
Nancy Brecheen Grant (BA ’36) died April 10, 2001 in Plano. She taught English during the 1930’s and was a pioneer in education in the Spring Hill High School.

Mary Stevenson Moseley (BA ’36, MA ’69) passed away on January 10, 2001. She was a resident of Henderson, TX.

Annie Reba Brewer (BS ’38) died May 9, 2001. She taught school in Hopkins County until moving to Dallas, where she retired from the Dallas ISD purchasing department.

Mary Evelyn Holt McGlasson (BS ’38, MED ’53) passed away on March 5, 2001 in Paris, TX. She taught in the Roxton ISD for 31 years, retiring in 1959. She then worked for the First Bank of Roxton for 27 years.

Samuel T. Montgomery, Jr. (BS ’38, MS ’49) passed away on April 14, 2001. He was a retired teacher, coach, principal and superintendent. He was a lifelong resident of Whitewright and spent 35 years in education.

Mozelle Turrentine Kemendo (BS ’39) died March 18, 2001 in Dallas. She taught home economics in Cisco and Blairstown, TX.

Eunice Irene Perkins (BS ’39, MED ’53) died March 20, 2001 in Tyler. She was a retired school teacher for the Tyler ISD, where she taught for 18 years, and she taught in the Mount Pleasant ISD for 27 years.

Madge Chapman Lumpkin (BS ’40) passed away on April 16, 2001 in Tyler. She was a draftsman for more than 35 years with Rockwell Valve Company.

Anna Sandridge McKay (BA ’40), wife of Judge (Ret.) Neil McKay (BA ’38), passed away on May 16, 2001 in Houston. She served as a guidance counselor for many years at Memorial High School and was past president of Spring Branch Teachers Association.

Billie Frances Swint (BS ’40) died March 8, 2001 in Poulsbo, WA.

Tom Harrison Taylor (BS ’40) died May 10, 2001. He worked for the Texas Highway Department (known today as the Texas Department of Transportation) for 41 years, including three years as assistant director of the Travel and Information Division, and 26 years as division director. He was a longtime resident of West Lake Hills, TX and served as Mayor from 1974 until 1996.

Girlie Lain Hoffman (BS ’41, MS ’48) passed away on March 11, 2001 in Pittsburg, TX. She was an elementary school teacher, retiring from the Pittsburg ISD.

Gertrude Morgan Barclay (MS ’42) passed away on April 27, 2001. She taught school in Commerce, Mesquite and at East Texas State University.

O. Lee Ryser (BS ’42) passed away on April 8, 2001. He retired from Monsanto as regional sales manager after 35 years of service.

Willie Mae “Billie” Kight Hayter (BA ’43) died February 19, 2001 in a Florida nursing home. She was a founding member of the Women’s Auxiliary at San Angelo Community Hospital where she served as a volunteer for over 25 years.

Billy Carlton Bartley (BS ’46) died April 7, 2001 at his home in Coleman, TX. He was active in the field of education for 37 years, serving in the positions of teacher, coach, and principal. Twenty-seven of these years were spent in Coleman.

Jim Tom Combs (BS ’48) passed away on May 31, 1999 in Sulphur Springs, TX. He was a retired school teacher and he served in the Air Force during World War II.

Melbourne Harris (BS ’48, MED ’50) passed away on March 27, 2001 in Walla Walla, WA. He was a retired school teacher of 35 years in Sunnyside, WA.

Grady R. Mankin (BS ’49, MED ’51) died April 21, 2001. He was retired from the Dallas ISD after 30 years of service.
Faye Bush McCombs (BS ’49, MS ’50) passed away in August 2000.

Robert “Jake” Samuel (BS ’49) passed away on April 4, 2001. He began work in Denton as assistant county agent in 1952 and in 1954 he joined Moore Business Forms, where he retired after 28 years.
