Club pin finds its way back

Alumns Bill McAfee
Bill McAfee holds an Artema Club pin that will be displayed with
other A&M-Commerce memorabilia at the Heritage House. A 1936

the pin to Catherine Crawford, executive director of the Foundation.
The pin belonged to Forest Lake of Greenville, president of Artema
in 1949. The Artema Club was a mens social organization established
in 1935 that would become Lambda Chi Fraternity in the 1950s. Bill
and fellow student Joe Gentry organized Artema after receiving President
Sam Whitleys approval. The members designed the club pin,
which featured 14 small pearls, each one representing one of the
14 members.

A recent doctoral graduates research into the unexpectedly
healthy way law enforcement officers communicate with their spouses
led her to win the Universitys first Distinguished Dissertation
Award. Dr. Lynn Winstead Mabe, who earned her doctoral degree in
counseling last December, said, The interesting finding of
my research is that it is commonly thought the more we share, the
better marriage would be, but this was not found in this law enforcement
sample. For officers, sharing could make spouses worry more
or compromise certain operations, she says.

The Emergency Response Vehicles.

Recently Dana Allen (BA '93( and other members of
the Red Cross Rapid Response Team went to work at the olympics,
the nations biggest event since the terrorist attacks. In the group
picture, Dana and other Red Cross workers cheer the olympic torch
as it goes by. "The biggest thing we did is the first aid for
the crowds," says Dana. "we stayed in a former polygamist
colony ( no lie) that had about 40 bed rooms and this weird wedding
arch outside, but it was in the mountains and the scenery was gorgeous!
we watched the Opening Ceremony, and did get time off to see a few
events. We were able to purchase tickets for Men's Doubles Luges
finds, the Gold Medal Womens Curling match, and USA vs Finland Women's
Hockey. These tickets were affordable, but some were horribly expensive!
Opening Ceremony tickets were $885, and any ice skating event was
seven hundred dollars-some of the figure skating was $1,300 and
more". In the top photo are a cadre of emergency response vehickes,
just in case, says Dana, "any type of natural or human-caused
disaster-we were on the third most active fault line in the country.
