Wilson, Konlande Take Top Athletic Awards

Seniors Antonio Wilson and Sherri Konlande claimed the top awards at the 2000 All-Sports Banquet held April 25.

Wilson added the J.V. Sikes Award to his collection of honors for the year. The Sikes Award is presented to the football player who shows outstanding leadership, attitude, scholarship, loyalty, achievement and desire.

Konlande, from Arlington, won the Lib Huggins Award as the University’s top female student athlete. The soccer midfielder set new school and Lone Star Conference records for assists in a season in leading the Lions to their first berth in the NCAA Division II Soccer Championships and the Elite Eight. The Huggins Award honors the outstanding woman athlete on the basis of competitive spirit, sportsmanship, athletic ability and contributions to the program.

Two other special awards were presented to seniors Harold Chambers and Mary Watson.

Chambers won the Terry Allen Award for the second consecutive season. The Mexia senior played all season with a partially torn knee ligament and still was third on the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 12.2 points and 5.6 boards a game. The Allen Award honors men’s basketball players for their scholarship, citizenship, loyalty, contribution to team effort and athletic skill.

Watson earned the Susie Knause Memorial Heart Award for her play for the Lions. Watson was second on the team in scoring with 11.7 points a game and led the team with 3.2 assists per contest.
