Junior Kyle
Stinson placed fifth at the NCAA Division II West Regional Championship
on May 4 in Bakersfield, Calif., and just missed earning a trip
to the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
Stinson fired
a final round one-under-par 71 to complete 54 holes at even-par
216, tied for fifth place. The lone competitor in the field for
A&M-Commerce, Stinson also tied Drury’s Kevin Hogg for the only
medalists spot from the region to the national tournament.
The pair went
two playoff holes before deciding who would get the spot. Stinson’s
drive on the second playoff hole went out-of-bounds, causing the
Lion to take a double-bogey six on the par four hole. Hogg responded
by sinking a nervous two-foot putt for a bogey five on the hole
for the national berth.
The Lions were
fifth at the LSC Championships in 2000, battling high winds on the
course. Stinson finished in a tie for second individually, posting
at 224 for 54 holes at the Texas Star Golf Course in Euless. Rob
Guy was the next best Lion at 234 and Cody Moore at 238.
The Lions won
the District VI Qualifier at Briarwood in Tyler in March, with Stinson,
Guy and Moore all tying for 10th at 220.
