Two retired
faculty members died this spring.
Dr. John Richard
Moss, retired professor of psychology and special education, died
April 13 and Dr. Robert Lee Jones, retired head of the department
of history, died May 30.
Moss died at
his home in Campbell. Funeral services were held April 16 at the
First Baptist Church in Commerce with burial in Brigham Cemetery.
Moss was born
in Earlsboro, Okla., in 1928. He served in the U.S. Army during
the Korean Conflict in the Combat Engineer Battalion, 45th Infantry.
Prior to joining
the A&M-Commerce faculty on Sept. 1, 1970, Moss received his
bachelor of science degree in education from the University of Central
Oklahoma, master of education degree from Southern Methodist University
and his doctorate from the University of Tulsa.
After completion
of his doctoral work, Moss became certified as a psychologist and
in special education. Moss retired from A&M-Commerce in May
of 1986; he continued to teach a few courses part-time until 1998.
Surviving are
his wife of Campbell; his mother of Tulsa, Okla.; a son, Kevin Moss
of Campbell; daughter, Monette Douglas of Campbell; and several
other relatives. Memorials may be made to the Building Fund of the
First Baptist Church in Commerce.
Jones died in
Arlington at the age of 106. A memorial service was held June 2
at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Arlington.
The Italy, Texas,
native attended Henderson-Brown College and received his bachelor
of arts from Southern Methodist University in 1917, his master of
arts from the University of Texas in 1920 and his doctoral degree
in 1923 from Stanford University in California.
Prior to joining
the faculty at A&M-Commerce in 1939, Jones was head of the department
of history and government at Trinity University. Jones retired from
A&M-Commerce in 1964.
During their
years in Commerce, Dr. and Mrs. Jones played an active role in community
affairs and attended the First Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Jones,
who preceded her husband in death, served for several years as a
social reporter for the Commerce Journal.
Following retirement
to be nearer their children, they moved to Arlington where they
continued to be active in civic and church activities.
