Marleena Proffer (BS ’97) and husband, Brian, are proud to announce the arrival of Landree Koehler Proffer on November 8, 2000. She weighed 7 lbs., 8 oz. and was 20 inches long.

Timothy E. Ladd (EDD ’98) is assistant professor of education at Palm Beach Atlantic College in West Palm Beach, FL.

David M. Lewis (BSIS ’98) is the head coach at Lyles Middle School in Garland, TX.

Angela Kay Britton (BSCJ ’99) married Christopher L. Burnett July 28, 2000 on Grand Cayman Island. She is employed by Alliance Bank.

Susan Elizabeth Foster Fox (BS ’99), an employee of Fifth District Court of Appeals in Dallas, married Derek Fox

(Former Student) on October 21, 2000 in Sulphur Springs. He is employed by W. Wolfe and Associates, Inc., an orthopedics company. The couple is residing in Valley Ranch.

Patti Cason Scarborough (BS ’99) married Micheal Alan Dennis on July 31, 2000. They reside in Irving with their son, Paul Alan Dennis, age 12.

Tani McAlister Faulks (BA ’00) is working as a senior communications consultant for an internet-based technology company, World Connect. She is married to Daryl Faulks (BS ’97).

Brad Gibson (BS ’00) is teaching physical education and coaching at Mexia Junior High School, Mexia, TX.

Former Students
David W. Dickerson is currently the production manager and FOH engineer for the country music group Perfect Stranger. He has been with the group since their signing to Curb Records in 1996. Perfect Stranger is best known for their hit single “You Have The Right To Remain Silent."

Beryl F. Sears was named superintendent for the Howe ISD, Howe, TX on December 1. He was previously superintendent of the Sam Rayburn ISD in Ivanhoe.


In Memory
Cecil McMillon (BS ’29) passed away in November, 2000. He was a veteran of World War II and the owner of the Cecil McMillon Uniform Service Co. in Dallas, retiring in 1974.

Rachel Braziel (BA ’32, MED ’54) passed away on October 25, 2000 in Emory. She was a retired school teacher, having taught one year in Point and twenty-nine in Emory and Rains.

Thelma Vivian Russell (BS ’36, MS ’47) passed away on September 27, 2000. She taught school for 50 years, 45 of those in Marietta,TX, serving as principal for the last 18 years of her service. She was a member of the Oakridge Baptist Church for more than 80 years, a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, and the Texas State Teachers Association.

Katherine C. Carrington (BA ’37, MA ’45) passed away on September 15, 2000 at her home in Paris, TX. She was an educator and taught school in Texarkana, Gladewater, Shreveport and Cooper. She served as organist and choir director at churches in Shreveport and Cooper and later taught private piano.

Cora Birdwell Furlong (BS ’38, MED ’55) passed away on September 18, 2000 in Dallas.

Lulu Conner Helm (BS ’38) died September 25, 2000 in Sulphur Springs. She was a former school teacher and active businesswoman, as well as actively involved in civic affairs.

Naomi Press (BA ’38, MA ’52) passed away September 20, 2000 in McKinney. She was an educator for 44 years.

Margaret Bean Reeves (BS ’38, MS ’50) died September 11, 2000 in Tennessee. She taught school in the McCamey Schools for over 30 years, where she retired in 1967, as well as the Centennial Grade School in Coleman County for 10 years.

Ethelleen Williams (BA ’38, MED ’50) passed away October 11, 2000 in Savoy. She retired from teaching in 1979, after 37 years with Bonham ISD. She began her teaching career, after graduation, at the School of Music in Paris, TX and in the Bogata School System.

John William Allen (BS ’40) passed away on November 3, 2000 at his home in Lucas, TX. He attended the Training School at East Texas State Teachers College. After college, he became the high school band director at the Weinert, TX, ISD. He then moved to Vernon, TX, where he began his 40-year career in radio. On November 22, 1963, he was the first newscaster in the nation to announce the assassination of President John Kennedy.

Dorothy Louise Moxley Laws (BS ’41) passed away on October 12, 2000 in Montana. She began teaching art at age 19 at the high school in Tyler, TX. She later taught at Paris, TX.

Ina Delle Sparks (BA ’42, MA ’43) passed away on May 21, 2000 in Paris, TX. She began her 46-year teaching career in 1943 in the Deport School System, Prairiland ISD, retiring in 1989 in the same building she began teaching. She received outstanding teacher of the year for Lamar County in 1965, was a member of the Paris-Lamar Retired Teachers Association, and a volunteer of the McCuistion Regional Medical Center Auxiliary.

Mildred L. Hostetler (BS ’46, MED ’66) passed away on October 21, 2000 in Paris, TX. She taught in public schools for 38 years in Lamar County, was a realtor for 18 years, and was very active in civic organizations.

Hueola Alphin (MS ’49) passed away September 10, 2000 in Athens, TX. She was a second-grade school teacher for the Athens ISD. She began teaching at the age of 16, and taught for over 50 years.

Albert Mitchell (BA ’49, MED ’52) passed away September 22, 2000 in San Antonio. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and worked most of his life for State Farm Insurance Co. in Irving.

Doise Lee Rountree (BS ’49, MS ’49) passed away December 11, 1999. He was in the US Air Force during World War II. He taught school in Anona, TX, and became superintendent of the Allen ISD for 24 years, until his retirement in 1978.

Robert Clyde Toon (BS ’49) passed away October 2, 2000. He was district director of the US Department of Agriculture and of the Farmer Home Administration for 42 years, until his retirement. He served in the US Navy during World War II, in the Pacific Theater. He was active in many civic organizations.

Blanche Inez White (BS ’49) died on October 7, 2000. She taught first-grade in Martin and Dawson counties, retiring from the Lamesa ISD in 1973. She and her husband owned White Motor Company in Lamesa.

Virginia Bardwell (BS ’50, MS ’50) died on October 5, 2000 in Paris, TX. She taught business courses at both Blossom and Prairie High Schools, taught in Chillicothe, and taught adult education at Paris Junior College before retiring in 1973. She also served as superintendent of schools in Pattonville.
Truett Jefferson Allen (MED ’51) passed away on October 10, 2000 in Dallas. A lifelong educator, he served as a teacher and principal in the Dallas ISD from 1944 until his retirement in 1974.

Mary Jane Chance Harrison (MS ’51) died October 22, 2000 in Pittsburg, TX. She was retired from the Pittsburg ISD as a teacher.

Van Buren Hill, Jr. (BBA ’52) passed away on September 18, 2000. He served in the US Navy and was active in White Rock Rotary, Love Field Masonic Lodge and Dallas Scottish Rite KCCH Hella Shrine. He was a musician, engineer, and stockbroker.

Ramon “Ray” Rachel (BS ’54) passed away October 8, 2000 in Dallas. He was a retired Lieutenant Colonel of the US Air Force with 22 years of service, retired as a teacher from the Farmersville ISD, and was involved in numerous civic organizations.

Juanita M. Smart Rodgers (BS ’60, MS ’64) passed away on October 14, 2000 in Rowlett. She was a retired teacher from Mt. Pleasant, moving to Garland in 1988. She was a member of Kappa Psi of Delta Kappa Gamma Society of Garland.

Dr. Charles Earl McGee (BS ’61) passed away on September 22, 2000 in New Jersey. He was president of RMC Calibration Services (Radio Activity Measurements).

Dr. Gayle Weaver (BS ’62, MS ’65, PHD ’69) passed away November 13, 2000 of a heart attack. He was a charter faculty member of the Dallas County Community College District, devoting more than 40 years as a teacher of science. He taught at Eastfield College until his death.

Angie Woodson (BS ’63, MS ’69) passed away November 5, 2000 in Frisco. She was a retired librarian for the Mesquite ISD. She was a member of the Texas Teachers and Retired Teachers Association and was active in the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Johnnie Mae Topping Watts (BS ’65, MED ’70) passed away on October 19, 2000. She taught school at Hodges Elementary, Balch Springs, TX, before becoming a full-time mother and homemaker. She was also involved with the Ladies Auxiliary of the Carpenters Union, on both the local and state level, where she held many offices.

Jimmie Dale Day (BS ’70, MS ’73) passed away on October 4, 2000 in Sulphur Springs. He was director of special education for Hopkins County. Prior to this position, he taught agriculture for several years at Daingerfield and Miller Grove, was principal at North Hopkins and Miller Grove, and was superintendent at Yantis for five years.

James “Jim” Shoaf Featherston (MS ’70) passed away October 19, 2000 in Baton Rouge, LA. He was a former Dallas Time Herald reporter who helped cover President John F. Kennedy’s assassination. He retired from Louisiana State University in 1994
