1930-59
Marine Col. William A. Sparkman Jr. (retired) (BS
’38, MED ’51, MS ’50) was recently awarded with
a lithograph of a 1942 AU-1 Corsair in recognition as a trailblazer
in military radar use. Upon being one of only 23 people ever commissioned
by the Marines, he entered as a second lieutenant in October 1942
and was sent to Navy radar school at Harvard University. More than
half a century later, he has been recognized as a founding father
in the use of radar as an offensive, as well as defensive tool,
and for creating a reserve radar squadron which is still in existence.
Edna Brown Tittle (BS ’46, MED ’53)
celebrated her 100th birthday on July 18. The mayor of Daingerfield,
TX declared July 14-20 as Edna Tittle Week in her honor. She taught
school for 40 years in East Texas.

Clarence Lynch (BS ’55),
his wife, Jean Jones Lynch (BS ’56, MED
’61), son, Keven, grandson, Kruz, along with 18 relatives,
cruised to Mexico. They also spent a week in Lafayette, LA at
the “8 and Under World Series,” watching Kruz hit
homeruns. |
Jo Ann Durham (BS ’56) was recently elected
into membership of the Salmagundi Club as a non-resident member.
The Salmagundi is a non-profit center in New York, dedicated to
the advancement of American painting, sculpture, photography and
art appreciation.
Dr. William George Jr. (BA ’56) is a family
practitioner in Port Arthur and was recently honored by the American
Heart Association.
1960-69
Dolores Jackson (BS ’60, MED ’66) retired
in May from Chisum High School, Paris, TX after teaching for 38
years. She taught business/computer subjects, worked with students
in UIL events and sponsored the school yearbook. She was named Secondary
Teacher of the Year in 1997 for Chisum ISD.
Dr. Barry B. Thompson (MS ’61) was recently
honored by Tarleton State University by having the “Dr. Barry
B. Thompson Student Center” named for him. He served as Vice
President of Academic Affairs at A&M-Commerce before returning
to Tarleton and being named president and chief executive officer
of TSU in 1982.
Bobby D. Williams (BS ’61) was recently inducted
into the Academy of Honor in Agriculture Credit by the Farm Credit
Bank of Texas.
Dr. Marlin Young (BBA ’61, MBA ’62),
dean of the Nelson Rusche College of Business at Stephen F. Austin
State University, has been named interim vice president for academic
affairs. He joined the SFA faculty in 1967 and was named associate
dean of the College of Business in 1982. He began serving as dean
of the college in 1992.

Dr. J.K. Crain (BA ’64, MS ’90, EDD
’92) applied for professional licensure in industrial and
software engineering and was notified this summer that he has been
approved as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Texas.
He is a faculty member in the department of Industrial Engineering
and Technology at A&M-Commerce.
Sue Whitehead Shanks (BS ’67, MS ’73)
has been selected as the state director for Destination ImagiNation.
She previously was an administrator for Dallas ISD.
Mike Stanglin (BS ’68) is currently living
in Nashville, TN and has been selected by Music Row Magazine as
an “In Charge” recipient for 2002. He is currently personal
manager for Curb Records recording artist Steve Holy and a music
publisher of “Good Morning Beautiful,” a number-one
single for five consecutive weeks on the Billboard Country Music
Charts earlier this year. He is being named president and chief
executive officer of TSU in 1982.

1970-79
Robert J. “Bob” Aquino Jr. (BS ’70)
and his wife, Elizabeth, have three grown children, Anthony and
his wife Sara, Robert and Karrye. He served time in the Army, was
vice president of a restaurant chain overseeing 17 restaurants and
has been in the insurance business for over 20 years. He is an active
member of Tate Springs Baptist Church, serving as SS director, deacon
and choir member. He is also an active member of Cowboys for Christ
and is on the Chaplancy Board at Lone Star Park. He substitutes
in the Agriculture Department at Arlington ISD, and one of his hobbies
is working with his seven horses.
Mike Webb (BS ’70) has been involved in dairying
since 1967 and has owned Webb Dairy since 1980. He and his wife,
Sandra, were recently featured in an article in the Winnsboro News.
Their children are Robin Vint, Mica Webb and Paula Barnett (BS ’90),
a teacher at Como-Pickton ISD.
Debby McCord (BS ’71, MED ’75) is the
principal of Reed Elementary School in Allen, TX. She has served
as assistant principal there since 1997 and began her professional
career as a second- and third-grade teacher at Royse City ISD in
1972. She also taught at Leonard and DeKald ISDs.
Barbara Beadles Carey (BS ’73, MS ’77)
retired in May after 29 years with Channing (TX) ISD. She taught
consumer and family service classes (the new name for home economics)
and, over the years, served as cheerleader sponsor, yearbook advisor
and as senior sponsor six times.
Dr. David Conway (BS ’74) is director of
Southeastern Oklahoma State University’s Aviation Sciences
Institute and has been selected by the International Biographical
Centre of Cambridge, England, for inclusion in its publication,
“2000 Outstanding Scientists of the 21st Century.” His
nomination was based on his research in hypobarics at Oklahoma State
University, which resulted in the establishment of a hypobaric program
and the Center for Aerospace and Hyperbaric Medicine at the OSU
College of Osteopathic Medicine. He was selected as a consulting
editor for the International Journal of Aviation Research and Development,
is a member of the panel of reviewers for the Journal of Air Transportation
World Wide and a contributing editor for Twin & Turbine magazine.
He also has been selected for inclusion in the 2002 edition of Who’s
Who Among American Teachers, scheduled for publication in October.
He is retired from the United States Air Force, where he was chief
of the Aerospace Physiology Training Unit. He is a member of several
civic and professional organizations and is an FAA-certified flight
instructor, holds commercial and instrument ratings and has compiled
more than 3,800 hours of flight time.
Jerry Cook (MS ’74) has taught at the junior
high and high schools in Ennis, TX for 32 years.
Jerry D. (J.D.) Wells (BS ’74) retired from
the Air Force in 1992 and presently lives in Portland, OR where
he is workforce recruiter for the Pacific Region of the U. S. Fish
and Wildlife Service. He is responsible for recruiting personnel
for service vacancies in California, Hawaii, Idaho, Oregon, Washington,
Guam and the Pacific Trust Territories. Prior to relocating to Oregon,
he worked as manager of public information for Texas Commission
for the Blind, and as a recruiter for the University of Texas at
Austin.
Dr. Nita J. Clyde (BBA ’75, MBA ’76), a partner with
Clyde Associates where she specializes in executive training and
litigation support, was recently elected chairman-elect of the Texas
Society of Certified Public Accountants. A former member of the
Texas State Board of Public Accountancy, she is also a part of the
American Institute of Certified Public Accountants governing committee
and the Federal Accounting Standards Advisory Board appointments
panel. An author and ethics expert, she is a frequent speaker at
conferences and seminars throughout the United States.
Jimmy Charles (BBA ’76) was recently selected
as county executive director of the Fannin County Farm Service Agency.
Annie Perry (BS ’76, MED ’79) is director
of career and technology programs for Paris ISD.
Frankye Sessums (BS ’76) is volleyball coach
at Prairiland (TX) ISD, and her Lady Patriots won the 2001 2A State
Volleyball Championship. She was named Texas Sport Writers 2A Coach
of the Year and Baden-TGCA Volleyball 2002 Coach of the Year.
J.B. Zahn (BS ’76) completed his 25th year
of employment with ChevronTexaco Oil Company in January. He has
been married to the former Sherry Lynn Mayo of Quitman, MS for 21
years. They reside in Meridian, MS.
Sandra Rhea Morris (MED ’77) retired in June
from Community ISD, Nevada, TX after 28 years of service. She taught
elementary physical education, math and reading, as well as high
school arts and crafts in the afternoon after spending the morning
with her class of 5 year olds. She also sponsored many extracurricular
activities over the years.
