Alumna replaces Blackwell as volleyball coach

The volleyball Lions gained a new leader just before practice started in August when former Lion Gwen Adams (BS ‘98, MS ‘99) was named to replace seven-year head coach Larry Blackwell.
Blackwell resigned from the University Aug. 15 to pursue opportunities outside of intercollegiate athletics. He had posted a record of 123-122 at A&M-Commerce and a 14-year career record of 239-224.
“I have an opportunity for a change, and I feel it’s best for me and my family to go after it,” Blackwell stated.

Gwen

From 1994-’97, Gwen was a two-time honorable mention All-Lone Star Conference performer as “Wendy” Adams, and in 1998 she was a graduate assistant for the Lions. She still ranks fifth in career digs at A&M-C with 1,088 and is ninth on the career kills list with 972. She led the Lions with 389 kills as a junior and was second on the team with 394 as a senior.
She was head coach at NCAA Division I Campbell University (N.C.) last year after two seasons as an assistant at North Texas and a season as head coach at Concordia in Austin.
“We’re pleased to have Gwen back in the A&M-Commerce family,” said Athletic Director Paul Peak. “At this late date we’re very fortunate to get a coach with her experience as a member of our coaching staff.”
He added, “She’s a successful coach and I’m looking forward to continued success in our volleyball program.”
She led Concordia to a 23-6 record and the American Southwest Conference championship in her first season as a head coach. Her two-year career record as a head coach is 26-27.
“I’m excited about coming back, coming home,” said Gwen. “It’s a warm and welcoming feeling returning. I’ve been exposed to other environments in my career that weren’t as comfortable. I really appreciate the support here at A&M-Commerce.”
Gwen earned her bachelor’s degree in physical education and psychology from the University in 1998 and her master’s in health and physical education in 1999.

Wilson named to LSC Hall of Honor

Former Lion quarterback Wade Wilson has been honored once again.
Wilson, who was inducted last year into the A&M-C Athletic Hall of Fame, was selected to the Lone Star Conference Hall of Honor this past summer.
A former Pro Bowl quarterback with the Minnesota Vikings and a Super Bowl winner as a member of the Dallas Cowboys, Wilson led the Lions to the 1980 NAIA semifinals. An All-American as a senior and two-time All-LSC pick, Wilson played 19 years in the NFL.
He’s the third Lion to earn entry into the LSC Hall of Honor. Former athletic director Jesse Hawthorne was a charter member of the LSC Hall in 1996 and legendary track coach/trainer Delmer Brown was selected in 2000.
Only three persons are selected to the league’s Hall of Honor each year.

Former Lion wins Texas State Open

Former Lion golfer Casey Devoll fired an even-par 71 in his final round to take a six-stroke victory in the 2003 Texas State Open.
A member of the 1998 LSC Championship team, Casey is a golf professional who left Webb Hill Country Club in Wolfe City in January to play professionally.
Casey just missed the course record at the New Course at White Bluff Resort when he carded a 66 in the third round of the tournament.

Former student plays in WPFL

A former A&M-Commerce student who didn’t play for the Lions is now a pro football player.
LaReaca Lewis is a member of the Dallas Diamonds of the Women’s Professional Football League.
“Reece” was a radio-television major at A&M-Commerce and worked as a student at KETR Radio. The rookie now wears jersey number 68 for the Diamonds and plays on the defensive line.
The WPFL began play in 2000, and the Diamonds are in their second season, which began in August.

Hall of Fame silver anniversary celebrated at Homecoming

This year’s annual Hall of Fame Banquet will be a giant 25th anniversary celebration of the Hall.
The Athletic Association’s Hall of Fame committee unanimously decided not to induct new members this year, opting instead to honor the 65 living members of the Hall of Fame on the silver anniversary of its first class.
Membership in the Hall of Fame now totals 108 individuals and two teams.
The celebration banquet will be held following the Homecoming football game on Nov. 1. A reception will begin at 6 p.m., followed by the banquet at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Student Center.
