Judith Lauderdale Hasten (BS ’72, MED ’79) retired after
teaching special education, reading and computer literacy for 29
years with the Bonham ISD. She is a member of the Retired Teachers
Association, the D.A.V. Auxiliary, and the Fannin County Democratic
Women. She and her husband are engaged in farming in Windom, TX.
Edryce Reynolds (EDD ’72) left for China on February 15,
2001 on an exchange teacher program for one year. At 72 years of
age, she is actively NOT seeking retirement!
Mary Spencer (BS ’72) serves as the Texas board president
for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. This organization
recently unveiled its state-of-the-art Mobile Adoption Vehicle,
the first of its kind in Texas, in Richardson.
Richard D. (Dick) Thedford (BS ’72, MS ’74) is the education
coordinator for agriculture and canine science, technology education,
trade and industrial education, and special populations for the
Plano ISD.
Mick J. Trusty (BBA ’72) is an attorney and counselor at
law in Fort Worth.
Dr. James T. Carroll, III (MS ’73) was recently appointed
as senior vice president and student lending manager at First National
Bank of Bryan/College Station. He began his banking career in 1982
at a bank in Carthage, serving as loan officer and compliance/personnel
officer, and most recently was with the Great East Texas Servicing
Corp. in Bryan as executive director and vice president of marketing.
B. F. Hicks (BA ’73) recently spoke at a meeting of the
Pittsburg/Camp County Museum Association. He is chairman of the
Franklin County Historical Commission, a past president of the Texas
Old Forts and Mission Restoration Association, and currently serves
as the attorney on the advisory board of the Texas Preservation
Trust Fund. He is very active in civic and community affairs.
Mike D. Roberts (BS ’73, MED ’78) has recently accepted
the position of superintendent of the Sinton ISD. Sinton is a 3-A
school district with an enrollment of 2,300. He previously served
as superintendent of the Snook ISD.
Larry Tucker (BS ’73) was recently named editor of the Edgewood
Enterprise in Edgewood, TX. He was previously sports editor and
feature writer for the Wood County Democrat in Quitman.
Maricia Dean Cooper Johns (BS ’74, MS ’75) is the coordinator
of Career and Technology for the Fort Worth ISD and is an educational
columnist for the Fort Worth Black News. She competed in and finished
the Austin Motorola Marathon on February 18, 2001.
Dr. Robert A. Carroll (MA ’75) has been promoted to professor
at the University of Southern Indiana. He also serves as assistant
chair, Department of Communications.
Linda Christian (BS ’75, MED 79) was elected on February
9, 2001 for a one-year term as district eight director for the Texas
Classroom Teachers Association. TCTA is a professional education
association representing more than 42,000 members across the state.
She is a resource teacher at Sulphur Springs Middle School, Sulphur
Springs, TX.
William S. McDonald (BA ’75) is manager of Municipal/Industrial
Client Development for Freese-Nichols, Inc., an engineering, environmental
science and architectural firm in Fort Worth.
Alan E. Merritt (BS ’75, MS ’80) is a staff scientist with
Bechtel Idaho, prime contractor to the Department of Energy for
operation of the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory.
He is responsible for Toxics Release and Inventory reporting. He
is married to Cheryl Fields Merritt (BA ’80), who owns her
own business, Merritt Graphics, an advertising specialties company.
The couple celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary in June 2000.
Dr. L. C. Stout (MS ’75, EDD ’87) retired on January 1,
2001 as the superintendent of the Prairiland ISD. He previously
was a principal at Blossom schools from 1985 to 1992. He now will
be mentoring teachers for the region VIII Education Service Center.
Elizabeth V. Hayden (BS ’76) currently teaches eighth-grade
language arts to the Talented and Gifted, Inclusion, and regular
education classes at Deerpark Middle School, Austin, for the Round
Rock ISD. She is involved in the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority and
the University of Texas Prejudice Awareness Summit, as well as other
interests. Her son, Major, is a college freshman.
Joe B. “Brad” Killingsworth (BS ’76, MS ’80) is completing
his 18th year with the Lewisville ISD as director of Career and
Technical Education, after 7 years with the Plano ISD as agriculture
teacher.
Stephen R. Hale (BBA ’77, MBA ’80) is economic development
specialist with the U.S. Small Business Administration in Jacksonville,
FL. He also serves as an adjunct professor at St. Johns River Community
College and on the Volunteer American Red Cross Disaster Assessment
Teams. He is married and has three children, Andrew, Tray and Lauren.
Charles A. Lea (BBA ’77, MBA ’79) was recently promoted
to chief financial officer of Journey Education Marketing, the leading
software marketer to the post-secondary academic market, which includes
students, faculty, staff, and educational institutions. He joined
the company as controller in March 2000. Prior to that, he was controller
for Mattress Giant Corporation.
Suzanne Kizer Woodley (BS ’77, MS ’98) was recently named
interim assistant dean of Enrollment Management at A&M-Commerce.
She previously served as director of Community College Relations
and Adult Student Marketing. In her new post, she will be directing
the University’s enrollment strategies as the University expands
its student markets and develops partnerships with community colleges.
Becky Burford (BBA ’79) was reappointed as Wood County Auditor
beginning January 1, 2001. She is a member of the Texas Association
of County Auditors.
Gary D. Finney (BS ’79) recently took an assignment with
Brink’s, U.S. as director of employment and employee relations.
He will oversee diversity, employee relations, branch recruitment/retention
programs, and affirmative action. He is also serving a second term
as president of The Texas A&M University-Commerce Alumni Association.
Dr. Jerry Stout (BS ’79, MED ’84, EDD ’95) will assume the
job of superintendent of the Roxton ISD on June 15, 2001. He spent
six years in the Cooper ISD before moving to Roxton, where he taught
biology, chemistry and served as assistant principal for the lower
grades.
1980-89
Collin Clark (BS ’80, MED ’92) will begin as superintendent
for the Celeste ISD in summer, 2001. He is currently in his fifth
year as junior high principal for Celeste.
Larry Goddard (BS ’80, MS ’91) has been named to the “Who’s
Who Among America’s Teachers, 2000.” All of the 114,000 teachers
honored in this sixth edition were selected by their former students.
A 15-year employee at A&M-Commerce, he serves as executive assistant
to the vice president of marketing and resource development and
teaches Freshman Success and Critical Thinking. He also served as
the president of the Commerce Chamber of Commerce for 2000 and is
presently a member of the chamber’s Board of Directors.
Phillip Dyer (MBA ’81) was recently appointed as president
of Legacy Bank of Texas. He will be primarily responsible for public
relations, business development, community relations, and strategic
planning. He was named Plano Citizen of the Year in 1998 and currently
serves on the Plano City Council.
Clifford R. Rushing (BS ’81) recently received his MBA degree
and works as a programmer at MBNA in Addison. He married Janet Robinson,
and has one daughter, Connie, and two stepchildren, Sandy and Dan.
Steve Scott (MS ’81) recently was hired as a counselor for
Wilkins Counseling Center in Center, TX. He also serves as the pastor
for the First Christian Church in Center.
Thalia F. Matherson (EDD ’82), a Dallas public school educator
and administrator, has become the first lay person, woman and African
American to serve as executive of the eight-state South Central
Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church since its creation in
1940. She will assume her new position on June 1, 2001. She is currently
principal of a magnet middle school in the Dallas ISD and was former
executive director of the Principals’ Training Program for the Dallas
public schools.
Geraldine “Tincy” Miller (MS ’82) recently had a guest editorial
included in The Dallas Morning News. She is also a member of the
State Board of Education.
Jack Sloan (BA ’82) and Kerri Sloan (BBA ’82), along
with their two children, Mandi and Jonathan, were recently recognized
by the Texas State Foster Parent’s Association as “Adolescent Foster
Family of the Year.” They were selected from a nomination group,
with a base potential consisting of 3,500 foster parents, from across
the state of Texas.
Vera Dike (BS ’83, MS ’90) is currently a music teacher
at OJIBWA Elementary in Macomb, MI.
Joe Jaynes (BS ’83, MS ’85) was recently reelected to a
second term as county commissioner in Collin County, TX, and is
currently pursuing a law degree.
Paul Lawrence, Jr. (BBA ’83) was recently assigned to a
regional director’s post in Philadelphia, PA, with United Parcel
Service. He has held a similar position since 1992 for the company’s
Dallas-based Southwest region.
Laura K. Moore (BS ’83) was recently promoted to senior
vice president of public relations and corporate communications
at RadioShack Corp. She leads the company’s media relations, corporate
communication, community relations and multi-media/special events
departments. She was a prime catalyst for changing the company name
from Tandy Corp. to RadioShack Corp. Prior to joining RadioShack,
she was vice president of corporate communications for Zale Corp.,
and is involved in many civic activities.
John “Moe” Callison (BS ’86) is the auto mechanics teacher
at Mineola High School by day and a helmet painter by night and
weekends. His helmet creations for racecar drivers and others are
known nationally. He has been contacted by operators of the
