David Johnson (BS ’50) passed away December 2, 2000 in
Sherman. He was a retired school teacher, having served as principal
of Whitewright High School for 35 years. He also served in the Korean
Conflict in the U.S. Army.
George Bernard Seaman (BS ’50) passed away on December 11,
2000. He taught at James Bowie school with the Dallas ISD for three
years and then entered real estate with A. B. Cass.
C. L. “Mike” Williams (BS ’51, MED ’58) passed away on
November 25, 2000 in a Tyler hospital. He served in the U.S. Navy
in World War II. In 1957, he was hired as industrial arts teacher
at Van High School, where he continued his career until his retirement
in 1980. He was selected as an outstanding industrial arts teacher
for the state of Texas in 1966.
Leitha Davis Allen (BS ’52, MED ’53) died December 31, 2000
in a Dallas hospital of congestive heart failure. She taught seventh-grade
mathematics, social studies and Texas history for 31 years at a
number of Dallas schools.
Richard (Dick) Carpenter (BS ’52) passed away on December
30, 2000 in Sulphur Springs. While in school at East Texas State
University, he was an all-star basketball player. For many years
he was a sales representative for Great American Insurance of Dallas.
From 1946 to 1978, he was a member of the Southern Basketball Officials
Association.
Ernest J. Hitt (BS ’52, MED ’59) passed away on February
28, 2000 in Kaufman, TX. He taught school and coached football in
Kaufman, Grand Saline, Canton, Terrell, and at Lake Highlands in
the Richardson ISD. He also taught at the Texas Youth Council, Gainesville,
TX. He was co-owner of Texoma Driving School, Sherman, until 1993
and was owner of Tri-County Driving School, Kaufman, for the past
six years, until his death.
Mary Alice Morgan (MED ’54) passed away on November 9, 2000
at a Waco hospital. She taught mathematics and physical education
and coached for many high school girls’ volleyball, basketball and
track teams in West, Gatesville, Sulphur Springs, LaVega, and Connally,
TX, until her retirement in 1977. She was a member of the 361st
Infantry Association of World War II Ladies Auxiliary and West Athletic
Booster Club.
Gerald B. Cranford (BA ’55, MA ’59) died on February 28,
2001 in Rogers, AR. He lived and worked overseas for over 40 years,
the last 35 of which were with the University of Maryland Overseas
Campus Program on military bases all over the world.
Dr. Ernestine Marie Linck (MA ’55, PHD ’68) passed away
on February 27, 2001. She began teaching in 1939 in Arkansas. From
1963 until her retirement in 1983, she was a professor of English
for the University of Texas at Arlington. She was an author and,
in 1999, the Commerce Chamber of Commerce voted her “Volunteer of
the Year.”
Samuel A. Mitchell, Jr. (BA ’57) passed away on January
17, 2000 in Fort Worth of Alzheimer’s disease. He taught high school
in Rockwall, TX, in the early 60s and then went to work for the
Social Security Administration in Baltimore, MD. He transferred
to Greenville, TX, where he retired in 1991.
Bob J. Carrell, Jr. (BS ’58, MS ’59) died on January 17,
2001 in Fort Worth. He taught at Texas Christian University, and
retired from the University of Oklahoma in 1991, where he was named
professor emeritus.
Sidney L. “Chief” Dauphin (BS ’58, MED) passed away on April
7, 2000 in Beaumont. On June 29, 2000, friends, family and employees
of Texas Home Health gathered in Silsbee, TX, to dedicate the building
and business complex in his memory. He started Texas Home Health,
Inc. in 1969 with his wife, Charline, and the business has now grown
to 23 offices and over 10,000 employees.
Sammie Oneal Smith (BS ’59) passed away on January 13, 2001
in Paris, TX. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a retired
postmaster.
Peggy Jean Friedel (BMED ’62) passed away on February 6,
2001 in Waco. She had played violin with the Baylor Symphony Orchestra,
Beaumont Symphony Orchestra, and Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra,
before teaching strings and orchestra in schools throughout the
Waco ISD for 20 years.
Louise Paulk (BA ’62) died on November 21, 2000 in Dallas.
She taught at Self School, north of Honey Grove, for a short time,
and at the Richardson ISD for more than 20 years.
Dr. Martha Blake (BS ’64, MS ’69, EDD ’82) passed away on
January 9, 2001 at her home in Alba, TX. She taught high school
for several years and later became one of the first women superintendents
in the state for Martins Mill School. The last eight years of her
career were spent as an assistant professor of Educational Administration
at the University of Houston, where she retired in 1996.
Mickey Florence (BS ’64) passed away on December 1, 2000
after a 10-month battle with cancer. He was a former Rockwall High
School football coach, assistant superintendent, and school board
member.
Johnnie Frank Mackery (BBA ’66) died on December 3, 2000
after a long battle with diabetes. He was founder and owner of Mackery
Copier Systems in Dallas, and was involved in several business and
civic organizations.
Patricia L. Green Byrd (BS ’67) passed away on January 17,
2001 following a brief illness. She retired after 35 years as a
teacher with the Richardson ISD.
Dee Mackey (BS ’67) passed away on February 26, 2001 of
a heart attack at his home in Gladewater. He excelled in both football
and basketball while at East Texas State University. In 1958, he
helped the ETSU football team to the Tangerine Bowl. He earned Little
All-American honors in basketball and football and was inducted
into the East Texas State Hall of Fame in 1984.
Christine Matthews (BS ’69) died on December 28, 2000 in
Tyler. She was a librarian and owner of Ms. M’s Beauty Salon from
1982 until 1998.
Marsha Murray Harlow (BS ’70) passed away on February 11,
2001. She began her career at the Express-News in San Antonio as
a copy editor in the women’s department. Throughout her 27-year
career with the paper, she held several positions, the last as feature
editor.
Edna Ruth Perry Thompson (BS ’70) passed away on December
12, 2000 in Sherman. She was employed by the Bonham ISD for seven
years and by the Sherman ISD for 23 years, until her retirement
in May, 2000.
David M. Tipping (BS ’72) died on December 7, 2000 in Dallas,
after a brief battle with leukemia.
David Riley Henry (BS ’73, MS ’74) passed away on February
14, 2001. He was a lead chemical tech at TXU.
Dr. Jimmie Nolan Smith (EDD ’73) passed away on August 8,
2000. He was chairman of the Psychology Department at Louisiana
State University in Shreveport.
Norbert J. Fuhrmann (BS ’75) passed away on August 27, 2000
after a five-year battle with cancer. He had been employed with
Raytheon in Greenville for 25 years.
Billie Nell Grisham Arizpe (BA ’76) died on February 17,
2001. She was a resident of Irving.
Dr. Peggy Parker Hammer (MED ’78) passed away on December
3, 2000. She spent 26 years with the Dallas ISD, first as an elementary
school teacher and then as an assistant principal. After 11 years
in administration, she requested to be allowed to finish her career
teaching kindergarten. On Friday, December 1, she had a heart attack
while reading to her class at Louise W. Kahn Elementary School in
West Dallas. She was very active in community volunteer work.
Rickey Lynn Randle (BS ’78) passed away on December 12,
2000 following a lengthy battle with cancer. He was employed at
Kimberly-Clark Corporation as information specialist-computer operations.
He had served many years as coach, officer, and supporting Dad for
Delta County Kid Baseball, and was a past member of the Cooper ISD
Board of Trustees.
Patricia M. Breslin (BS ’82) died on December 30, 2000.
She worked at the Veterans Memorial Hospital in Dallas as chief
operating room nurse.
Dr. Lois Allen Kemp (EDD ’82) passed away in December 2000.
She taught at Ouachita Baptist College for one year and was a member
of the faculty at Martha Turner Reilly School in Dallas for 38 years.
Kevin Wayne Blake (BS ’83) died on January 5, 2001 after
a lifelong battle with juvenile diabetes.
Davis Rouse (BS ’86) passed away on February 5, 2001. He
worked as an avionics systems engineer for Lockheed Martin in Fort
Worth for 22 years.
Lisa Anne Harmon (BS ’88) passed away in February 2001 as
a result of an automobile accident in Gunnison, Colorado. She was
a gifted singer and guitarist, who composed and performed folk and
inspirational music.
Mary E. (Lisa) Earl (Former Student) passed away on December
19, 2000 in Dallas. Beral N. Hance (Former Student) passed away
on December 8, 2000. She worked in the Castro County Extension Office
and for the Castro County Attorney until her retirement.
Ella (Pinny) Hervey (Former Student) passed away on June
26, 2000 in Houston.
Mabel Haynes Hurt (Former Student) passed away on January
6, 2001.
Abbe Elizabeth “Betty” Snipes Johnston (Former Student)
passed away on December 8, 2000.
William (Bob) Newsom (Former Student and Employee) passed
away on December 17, 1998. He graduated from Texas A&M University,
College Station, in 1950 and retired as Director of Housing at East
Texas State University.
Trudie Hatcher Nix (Former Student) passed away on January
9, 2001.
James L. “Jack” Oler (Former Student) died January 11,
2001. After serving in the U.S. Maritime Service during World War
II, he worked as a farm machinery mechanic for 20 years. He then
returned to school in 1973 and received his teacher certification
in vocational education for the handicapped. He taught at Tulia
(TX) Junior High School for 18 years.
Sterling J. Walker III (Former Student) was killed in a
car accident on November 26, 2000. He was a member of Kappa Alpha
Psi Fraternity while at A&M-Commerce. He received his master’s degree
in May, 2000, and was working on his doctorate in physical therapy.
Jo Lynne “Jody” Kizer (Former Employee) passed away on March
1, 2001 after a battle with cancer. She began work at the University
in 1986 and retired in 2000 because of health reasons.
Irene Swinson (Former Employee) passed away on January
25, 2001. She was a retired cafeteria server at ETSU.
