COMMERCE, Texas - Cory Brookshire of the Horton community in Delta County has been commissioned as an officer in the Texas A&M University-Commerce Police Department.
A&M-Commerce President Keith McFarland presented Brookshire with a framed certificate on June 19 recognizing his commission. The commission required approval by The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents.
Brookshire, who previously worked as a reserve officer with the Sulphur Springs Police Department, is a 1999 graduate of Cooper High School and a fall 2006 graduate of A&M-Commerce with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice.
1McFarland welcomed the patrol officer to the University Police Department. "We are happy to have you on the force," he said.
"Officer Brookshire is an alumnus and that will contribute to the overall ability to serve the university community," said University Police Chief Donna Spinato. "He has a desire to expand his law enforcement technology knowledge to assist the university and we are fortunate that he comes to us with these specialized talents," Spinato said.
"Everything has been great," Brookshire said. "It's a different environment from a municipality and more interaction with the community of students, faculty, and staff instead of responding to call after call as in a municipality," he said.
Brookshire's wife, Michelle, is an A&M-Commerce junior. They are the parents of four daughters ranging in age from 6 years to 10 months.
Away from work, the officer enjoys spending time with his family. "We really enjoy the country atmosphere and raising kids away from the inner city," Brookshire said.
His grandparents, Charles and Mary Ann Brookshire, also live in Horton. His grandfather worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Commerce and his grandmother is a former A&M-Commerce staff member.
