A&M-C REACHES OUT TO COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENTS

COMMERCE, Texas - This summer Texas A&M University-Commerce will welcome 10 student researchers from regional community colleges to its campus where they will participate in the second Research Experience for Undergraduates program, funded by the National Science Foundation as part of a $191,340 grant.

The students are highly recommended by their instructors and have maintained excellent academic standing in their studies of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The students are Johnathan Bailey, Christina Cutting, and Patrick Roberts of Navarro College; Mariano Coleman and Steven McDonough of Eastfield College; Tracy Fanous, Disney Rachel-Philip, and Anna Vladimirova of Collin County Community College; and Reuben Hinman of Northeast Texas Community College. Both Bailey and Reuben participated in the first REU program and are looking forward to applying their knowledge on new projects. Shiloh Free, a former REU researcher, transferred to A&M-Commerce last fall and will serve as a student mentor.

Starting June 4, the student researchers will work alongside faculty and gain hands-on experience in scientific research in chemistry and surface science. They will present their research findings at the end of the rigorous 10-week program in a symposium.

The offer includes a $3,000 stipend for the 10-week program, in addition to paid lodging and meals, support for research supplies and attending scientific conferences.

The student researchers will be involved in social activities, field trips, seminars, workshops, and will receive career advice from faculty mentors.

The review panel included A&M-Commerce's Dr. Anil Chourasia, Dr. Ben Jang, and Dr. Lance Whaley; Northeast Texas Community College's Dr. Jim Archer; and Collin County Community College's Dr. Fred Jury.
