Ara has taught in the Social Work Department at Texas A&M-Commerce since 1993. She teaches across the undergraduate and graduate program, teaching classes in practice, human behavior, and diversity. She is especially interested in populations at risk of social injustice and has worked extensively in the community with persons with severe and persistent mental illnesses. Prior to her academic experience, she was Administrator of Mental Health Services for Tarrant County, Texas; Director of Clinical Services for Acute Care Services at Colonial Hills Hospital, San Antonio, Texas; and a private practitioner in Arlington, Texas. She earned her MSW and Ph.D. degrees from The University of Texas at Arlington where she also taught as an adjunct professor while completing her dissertation. She is co-author of a new textbook, Dual Diagnoses: An Integrated Approach to Assessment and Treatment.
