Biography
Carlos Bertulani got his B.Sc. degree in 1979 from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In 1980, he won a public competition with dozens of candidates and was offered a tenured position as Assistant Professor of Physics in the same department. He was the youngest (and most inexperienced - in his own words) Professor to teach at that institution. He got a M.Sc. degree in Nuclear Physics in 1983 in what he claims was a pretty good PhD thesis! He took a leave of absence to get a real PhD at the University of Bonn, Germany. He completed his degree in 1987 with Suma Cum Laude (highest honors). Back to Rio he was promoted to Associate Professor in 1988. In 1991 Dr. Bertulani took a long leave of absence to visit Michigan State University (1991-1992) and the University of Wisconsin, Madison (1993). In 1994 he and his wife (a computer expert) were offered, simultaneously, full staff positions at the GSI laboratory, in Germany. They decided to return to their former jobs in Brazil in the following year.
In 1999 Bertulani’s wife accepted an offer to work at Chase Manhattan in the US. In 2000, Dr. Bertulani was awarded a prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship and moved to the US permanently. In the following years he has hold Visiting Professor positions in Brookhaven National Laboratory (2000-2001), Michigan Sate University (2002-2004) and the University of Arizona (2005-2006). He is now a Research Professor at the University of Tennessee with joint appointment with Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
Dr. Bertulani has published more than 130 papers, mostly as first or sole author. He has written 4 textbooks, including a very recent one entitled “Nuclear Physics in a Nutshell”, Princeton Press, 2007. He has organized numerous international conferences and edited and published 5 books of conference proceedings. Dr. Bertulani has taught 35 courses for undergraduate and graduate students. He is extremely active in the field of nuclear astrophysics, an area which requires an enormous experience.
Dr. Bertulani owns a house in Plano, Texas, where his wife and son live. His wife is an employee of JPMorgan, in Farmers Branch, Texas.
