Engineering at Texas A&M University-Commerce

FACT SHEET

This sheet briefly describes engineering opportunities currently available at A&M-Commerce.  These evolving programs change rapidly, thus for the latest information you will want to visit the web at

or call Ben Doughty at (903) 886-5478. A&M-Commerce also has a program in industrial engineering which may be of interest.  Other engineering programs are described below.

Generic Pre-engineering at A&M-Commerce

The comprehensive pre-engineering program at A&M-C will continue to function as it has in the past.  This program contains suggested courses for the first two years at Commerce which are representative of a broad range of accredited engineering programs. Agreements exist between A&M-C and several engineering colleges with specific course sequences designated for specific degrees.  These agreements provide reasonable efficiency in transferring into most programs at most engineering universities

Transfer-Engineering (2 + 2 Program) Specific for College Station

A&M-Commerce and the Engineering College at TAMU College Station have worked extensively to fine-tune the introductory engineering courses at Commerce (first two years) to closely parallel the first two years at College Station.   Thus transferring into College Station engineering programs has been greatly facilitated and allows many students to complete BS engineering degrees in the normal 4-5 years.

Dual-degree program A&M-Commerce and  Texas A&M at College Station (3 + 2 program)

An agreement between A&M-Commerce and TAMU allows interested students to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree from A&M-C and a Bachelor in Engineering degree from TAMU.  These students attend the University at Commerce for three years (including some summer sessions) and Texas A&M for two years.  At the end of this period, the student will have earned a degree at each institution.  The A&M-Commerce degree will contain a major in mathematics, computer science, or physics and the TAMU degree will be in one of several engineering areas.

Pathway to a MS Electrical Engineering degree (six year : 4 + 2 program)

An innovative program has been developed allowing a highly motivated student to obtain a bachelors degree from A&M-Commerce and a Masters degree in electrical engineering from TAMU in a period of six years.  The student attends A&M-Commerce for four years majoring in applied physics under the computer science option. This degree program provides most prerequisites for entry into the graduate electrical engineering program at Texas A&M University.   After entry into that program, the student may complete that program in the customary two year period. This combined program requires that the student follow the curriculum carefully through the duration of study.  Entry into other graduate programs may be possible with suitable planning and other Universities accept this background as sufficient for entry their electrical engineering program.

On-going Curriculum Development

We are currently pursuing opportunities to bring engineering physics and masters level engineering programs to the Commerce campus.  Students would attend classes offered by A&M-Commerce and also take distance learning courses (internet based) from other accredited universities.  The degrees would be awarded from A&M-Commerce or one of the participating universities.
