I thought
we just had a Student Center referendum to increase the
fee to $75. Why are we having another vote? Didn’t
you get enough the first time?
Yes, a referendum was approved in Fall 2002 to increase
the student center fee from $50 to $75. However, that
fee was intended for the ‘renovation’ of the
current student center. After much research, it was determined
that the current student center could not be renovated
in a cost effective manner; therefore, the decision was
made to construct a new $25 million dollar Student Center.
Thus, the University needs the increase in the fee.
So will the entire Student Center fee be devoted
to the construction cost?
No, a large portion of the student center fee will be
devoted to paying for the cost of the construction project.
However, the remaining dollars will be devoted to extended
operating hours and programming!!!
Example, if the referendum passes then the Student Center
will be open til midnight 4 days a week and will be open
on the weekends until 10 p.m.!!! And, think about the
great programming that can occur in a NEW Student Center.
The passage of this referendum will allow for an outdoor
patio area (great for concerts and open mic night); a
sports bar-like hangout (finally, a place to watch the
game, drink a ‘cool’ one, and have a great
burger); a hi-tech game room (Halo, Def Jam – The
Fight for New York City, Grand Theft Auto III, and NCAA
Football…sound like fun?); a ‘real’
convenience store that is actually open every hour that
the facility is open; and much, much more.
I’m a commuter…why should I pay for
something that I don’t use?
Our plans are to develop a Student Center to meet the
needs of our students – especially our commuting
students. Open spaces, comfortable lounges, computer access,
places to grab a quick bite or sit, eat and study. The
new Student Center will be designed to meet YOUR needs
… you WILL get your money’s worth out of the
new Student Center!
I graduate in May…why should I vote for
an increase? I don’t want to pay for something that
I won’t be able to use.
The fee does not go into affect until the Fall 2005 semester;
therefore, you won’t be charged the increase. As
for graduating, vote YES and leave your mark on the campus.
Help to make A&M-Commerce a better place for all future
students.
I’m a poor college student! I can’t
afford to vote for an increase in my fees!
We understand that as a college student you may not have
much money. However, did you know that we are the cheapest
school in the NE Texas region and that we are the 7th
(out of 10) cheapest school within the Texas A&M System?
As for not being able to afford the increase…it
is only a $25 increase…that equals $5 per month/per
semester. Surely, you can afford $5 per month! Take a
look at what your $5 per month provides: a new, first-class
Student Center which is actually student-focused!!! The
new Student Center will be YOUR space on campus!!!
Commerce is boring! I go home every weekend because
there is nothing to do on campus or in town. I’ll
never stay and use this facility, so why vote YES?
Okay, so you think Commerce is boring … well, get
out there and do something about it!!! Make a difference
in the CAMPUS LIFE…vote YES for a new $25 million
Student Center.
