The public relations sequence offers basic skills courses in writing, editing, and design and adds focused classes in the principles of the field, in writing documents for public relations, in the analyzing of and discussion of case histories, and in public relations campaigns. A student in this sequence is prepared to enter corporate, organizational, government/public affairs, and non-profit career opportunities.
A class in the basics of web publishing offers instruction in the fundamentals of on-line preparation of documents and gives students who wish to enter public relations and advertising an introduction in learning how to prepare web pages and to design web pages.
Public relations students must complete an internship. A&M-Commerce students have recently worked at area and DFW companies, public relations firms, advertising agencies, print media, hospitals, and other non-profit organizations.
A minor in public relations is offered for students in other departments who wish to complement their studies with work in the techniques and practices of public relations.
Guest speakers are utilized in public relations classes, and professional practitioners teach classes during some semesters. For example, in the spring term of 2006, a public relations professional taught Public Relations Writing, a junior-level class in which students learn to prepare materials directed for public relations audiences and for clients.
