The news-editorial sequence prepares students for careers in print journalism, with an emphasis upon newspaper and magazine writing. Students in this sequence complete a core of University and sequence courses which equip graduates with the intellectual background and journalistic skills to enter the professional world. Each student completes a liberal arts curriculum and undertakes courses in writing, editing, law, ethics, and media history. Each news-editorial major also serves a media internship.
A class in the basics of web publishing offers instruction in the fundamentals of on-line preparation of documents and complements the basic journalism courses.
A course in community journalism focuses on non-daily publications and highlights opportunities for students at Texas non-metropolitan newspapers.
Students write for The East Texan, the student newspaper. This publication is part of the Department-based Texas Intercollegiate Press Association, with headquarters in the Journalism Building.
For students who wish to teach journalism at the high school level, a sequence in secondary journalism is offered in co-operation with the College of Education.
A minor in journalism for students in other fields is also offered, as are double majors in Economics-Finance and Agricultural Sciences.
