will speak on:

The Poincaré conjecture—a Millennium prize problem and a Fields medal of 2006

Abstract:
The Poincaré conjecture is one of the seven millennium prize problems. In the past 100 years there had been an unknown number of mathematicians trying to solve the conjecture and there had been an unknown number of times that the conjecture was claimed to be proved. But it was not done until recent work of Grigori Perelman who won a Fields Medal (the "Nobel Prize of Mathematics") just a few months ago. In this talk, I plan to tell you some history of the conjecture, the significance of its solution, and how geometric analysis plays a role in solving this topological problem.

All students and faculty are welcome to attend!
