will speak on:

Working Memory in Mathematical Cognition: The Case for Fractions

Abstract:
Mathematical cognition is the science of studying how the mind does mathematics. Surprisingly little is known about the role that working memory plays in mental arithmetic, and even less is known about that role when it comes to fractions. In this talk, I will be describing the results of some experiments which investigated the working memory demands of different strategies for mentally comparing the size of two fractions. Implications for mathematics education and future directions of research will be discussed.

All students and faculty are welcome to attend!
