Accessing the Library's Internet Databases From Off-Campus

Off Campus access to the Library's databases for currently enrolled students, faculty and staff who do not use the University as their Internet provider is available via a Proxy Server.
It will require having the username and password. These can be obtained in the Reference Department of the Library, from your Instructor, or by phone 903-886-5721. Please have your Social Security number ready so your enrollment can be verified. The username and password are case sensitive. Enter them in lowercase.

An audio/video clip is now available which "walks" you through setting the proxy up. It provides screen-by-screen instructions for both Netscape and Internet Explorer. Click here: Proxy Movie

In an effort to provide better technical support for students the Library has placed on Reserve at the Circulation Desk copies of Netscape, Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and other software on CD's that may be checked out for one week and then returned. There are Windows and Mac versions of Netscape & Explorer available. The Metroplex Library will also have copies available for check-out. We have discovered Netscape works better with our Proxy Server and is necessary for AOL/Compuserv users. As newer versions become available we will continue to provide CD copies.

Read the instructions below which tell how to set the proxy up, turn it on and off.

Please note that the newest version of Netscape 6.0/6.1 does not have a functioning proxy setting. It will not work with our proxy. Netscape now has released version6.2 which will work with the proxy.

What is a proxy server?

Subscription and licensing agreements of the various databases requires that their use be restricted to the TAMU-C domain/students, faculty or staff. The proxy server allows users not using the University as their internet provider to access these restricted databases. When you use the proxy server, your connection will be recognized as coming from the TAMU-C internet domain (campus).

Please note:
It is important to remember that you will only want to use the proxy server when you want to access the restricted databases. You do not want to keep this setting enabled for other internet use. Instructions are provided above on how to turn the proxy setting on and off.
