Services Available For Distance Education Students

Texas A&M University-Commerce

Hello DE students. Hello Web, distant, remote, and off-campus students.

The TAMU-Commerce Library wants to provide you the full range of library services. Can we really reach that goal? Truthfully, we can't promise you coffee delivery from the machine in the student lounge (coffee that is often cited as a reason students transfer to other schools), but we can serve you intellectual bread and butter.

Who is a DE student?

  • You must be enrolled in a TAMU-Commerce course that does not meet in Commerce, or at the TAMU-Commerce Metroplex Center, or at Navarro College.
         Why?

If you meet in Commerce, we think you can get to the library.
If you meet at the Metroplex Center, they have a library and library staff.
If you meet at Navarro, we have arrangements with them to provide you library service.

Be aware: DE (and any other TAMU-Commerce) students can use the Metroplex and Navarro libraries to request books and photocopies from the TAMU-Commerce library.

  • You don't live in Hunt, Hopkins, or Delta county.
         Why?

We think students living in those counties are close enough that they can get to the TAMU-Commerce library. (Have a cup of coffee. Talk to a Reference Librarian. Live it up.)

  • You are not taking another course that does meet in Commerce.
         Why?

If you are coming to Commerce for another class, we hope you can get to the university library to do your in-library research for your DE class.

    Library Services

    1. For qualified DE students, we offer two new document delivery options:

  • You may request items from the Commerce library. We will mail you books (you are responsible for their return) and send you copies of articles, usually electronically. Use the request forms at Electronic Forms.

  • If we get something for you on Interlibrary Loan (from another library) we will send the item on to you. You don't have to come to the Library to get it, but if it is a book, you are responsible for returning it to us. Again, use the forms at Electronic Forms.

DE students and resident students have electronic access to a wide array of library tools. Be aware of the following:

    2. The HomeLibrary Home Page (http://www.tamu-commerce.edu/library/)

This is the springboard to all of the library's electronic resources. In particular, note the "Off Campus/Distance Ed" link, which leads you to an abundance of useful library information.

    3. The "How Do I Obtain Library Materials?" link (http://www.tamu-commerce.edu/libdist/getting_items.html). Explore these possibilities--
  • Come to the library
  • Use the full-text library databases
  • Visit our branch libraries
  • Use other libraries with your TexShare card
  • Use Interlibrary Loan (ILL) through your local public library
  • Contact us for assistance
    4. Full text/full image databases (http://www.tamu-commerce.edu/library/fulltext.htm)

These databases provide full-text articles from magazines, journals, books, newspapers, and encyclopedias. Please note that full-text will be text only, no graphics or photos. The full-image databases provide pictures that look like photocopies of the original printed articles.

    5. Proxy Server

You will need to use the proxy server to access databases from off-campus. From the HomeLibrary home page (http://www.tamu-commerce.edu/library/), click on Library Databases Via Proxy (http://www.tamu-commerce.edu/library/offdb.htm).

The proxy password changes each semester. If you need the password, call the reference desk at (903) 886-5720. After verifying that you are an employee or currently enrolled student, we will give you the current password.

Questions? Contact Jake Pichnarcik, ph 903 886-5722, Jacob_Pichnarcik@tamu-commerce.edu, fax 903 886-5723 or anyone in Reference ph 903 886-5720.
