Collection Development Policy


General Purpose and Program
The James G. Gee Library collection supports the curriculum and research needs of undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty in the Mass Media, Communication and Theatre Department. This also includes non-majors taking classes as electives. Gee Library also acts as community-based library and resources in the related collections may also be used by the general public.

"The department consists of five separate, but interrelated majors, with a strong liberal arts education, that prepare students for careers in communication arts and technology and the performing arts.”1 Subject areas include mass communications; reporting; advertising; public relations; editing and production; feature writing; media history; media law; web publishing; ethics in media; computer applications for print media; electronic prepress; image capture and manipulation; screen and transfer printing; flexography; electronic composition; typography; offset press work; color separation; speech; voice and phonetics; business, political, educational, organizational, and interpersonal communication; oral interpretation; acting; technical theatre; stage make-up; playwriting; stage dialects; lighting; history of the theatre; lyric theatre; broadcasting; news practices; mini cam operation; television broadcasting procedures and technology; radio and television writing; radio and television production; radio-television commercial practices; and broadcast station operation.

  • The degrees offered by the Mass Media, Communication and Theatre Department are:
    Bachelor of Arts and Science—majors in Graphic Image Reproduction; Journalism-News Editorial; Journalism-Public Relations; Radio-Television; Speech Communication; and Theatre.
  • Master of Art—Theatre .
  • Master of Science—Theatre.

Teacher Education Program

  • Major in Journalism—Secondary Certification
  • Major in Speech Communication—Secondary Certification or Specialization in Speech Communication for Interdisciplinary Studies Majors (for Elementary Teaching)
  • Major in Theatre Arts—Secondary Certification (two options)
  • Second Teaching Field in Theatre Arts


The Teacher Education Programs in the Mass Media, Communication, and Theatre Department are accredited by the State Board for Educator Certification

General Subject Boundaries
The collection development emphasis is on purchasing current literature for undergraduate curricula, graduate curricula, and research needs of all departmental disciplines.

Selection efforts in the Mass Media and Communication disciplines concentrate in the undergraduate level. Theatre and related subject areas will be collected through the graduate and research levels. Materials are deselected on the basis of condition, usage, and research value. One copy of the most recent edition of an item is retained unless heavy usage warrants multiple copies.
