General Purpose and Scope
The James G. Gee Library collection supports the curriculum and research
needs of undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty in
the Literature and Languages Department. This also includes non-majors
taking classes as electives. Gee Library also acts as community-based
library and resources in the related collections may also be used
by the general public.
The scope of the collection supports the Literature
and Languages departmental goals of improving reading, writing, and
analytical skills; offering insight into the usage and structure of
language; development an understanding and appreciation of literature;
and the exploration of film as an art form.1 Subject areas include
writing, research, all periods of American and British literature,
literature of the Western World, literary analysis, grammar, children’s
literature, English usage & composition, word building, mythology,
linguistics, pre-law composition, technical communication, history
& aesthetics of film, literature and film, French language and
literature, Spanish language and literature, philosophy, logic, and
ethics.
Literature and Languages Department Programs
The degrees awarded are the Bachelor of Arts in English and Spanish;
the Master of Arts and Master of Science degrees in English; the Master
of Arts in Spanish; and the Ph.D. in English. Also offered is Minor
in English or Writing; English Honors Program, Teacher Education Programs,
Minor in French, Minor in Philosophy, Minor in Spanish, Second Major
in Spanish, and Minor in Latin American and Caribbean Studies.

The Teacher Education Programs in the Literature
and Languages Department are accredited by the State Board for Educator
Certification.
Subject Boundaries
The collection development emphasis is on purchasing current literature
for undergraduate curricula, graduate curricula, and research needs.
New releases by contemporary authors in the English language are acquired.
This includes titles on the New York Times Best Sellers Fiction and
Non-Fiction Lists. Recent releases regarding composition, literary
theory, literary criticism, and linguistics are collected through
the research level. Works in Spanish are acquired at the undergraduate
and graduate levels. French materials are acquired at the undergraduate
level. Works in philosophy are acquired at the undergraduate level.
An effort will be made to strengthen the support of the Minor in Latin
American and Caribbean Studies.
