History Department Collection Development Policy

General Purpose and Scope
The James G. Gee Library collection supports the curriculum and research needs of undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty in the History Department. This also includes non-majors taking classes as electives. Gee Library also acts as community-based library and resources in the related collections may also be used by the general public.

The scope of the collection is in major eras of the history of the Americas and Europe. This includes materials for coursework in the History of Mexico and South America and some limited coursework regarding Modern East Asia. Geography, civilization, and historical themes are also included. Subject areas include: American History (overview and major eras), World Civilization; Social Studies; Historical Geography; European History (overview and major eras); Historical Thought; Methods and Historiography; History of Modern East Asia; History of Central and South America; 20th Century United States; History of Texas; Studies in African American History; History of the American South; History of the American West; American Diplomatic History; War in the Modern World; and Techniques of Historical Research and Writing.

The Texas A&M-Commerce History Programs
The History Department offers the B.A., B.S., M.A., and M.S. degrees. Teacher certification is also available.

The Teacher Education Programs in the History Department are accredited by the State Board for Educator Certification.

Subject Boundaries
The collection development emphasis is on purchasing current literature for undergraduate curricula, graduate curricula, and research needs. New releases in history (world and U.S.A.); social studies; and historical research and writing are heavily collected.
