GENERAL PURPOSE & SCOPE
The James G. Gee Library collection supports the curriculum
and research needs of undergraduate students, graduate students, and
faculty in the Department of Chemistry.
Chemistry subject strengths include: analytical chemistry, biochemistry,
analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, integrated science, natural
products chemistry, forensic science, science education, and surface
science.
The university offers the following degrees and majors in Chemistry
:
- Bachelor of Science in Chemistry (with or without teacher certification)
(Degree program meets American Chemical Society requirements for
certification.).
- Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry.
- Interdisciplinary Minor with Teacher Certification in Physical
Science.
- Specialization in Science for Interdisciplinary Studies (elementary
teacher certification).
- Master of Science in Chemistry (with or without Thesis) .
A comprehensive minor in chemistry is offered for doctoral degree students
with an interest in science education and majoring in supervision, curriculum,
or instruction.
GENERAL SUBJECT BOUNDARIES
The collection development emphasis is on purchasing current literature
for undergraduate curriculum.
The primary subject holdings for Chemistry are in LC classes QD 1 –
QD 9999 (General Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry,
Organic Chemistry, Physical and Theoretical Chemistry, and Crystallography),
and TP 1 – TP 9999 (Chemical Technology). The following areas
are also collected where relevant to this department: Q (General Science),
QB and QC (Physics), and T’s (General Engineering and Technology).

While selection of new materials is based on recently-published materials
in these LC classes, deselection (a.k.a. weeding) may be based on
age, research value, physical condition, and use of existing materials.
See Core policy for weeding criteria.
TYPES OF MATERIALS COLLECTED
The collection includes monographs, periodicals and other serial publications,
statistical works, directories, and other standard reference works.
FORMATS OF MATERIALS COLLECTED/DELIVERY OF MATERIALS
The collection includes material in print, microform, compact disc,
and online format. Although the bulk of the collection has traditionally
been in print format, as cost and availability have been concerns,
the collection has begun to move toward more electronic materials.
With the exception of material collected solely for classroom instruction,
no format is excluded if the material is relevant to the collection
and if the library has the necessary technology in place.
