COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT POLICY

GENERAL PURPOSE & SCOPE
The James G. Gee Library collection supports the curriculum and research needs of undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty in the Department of Biology and Environmental Sciences.

Subject strengths include: allied health, birds, botany, ecology, evolutionary biology, human biology, interactions between humans and the environment including climate, geography, geology, meteorology, microbiology, oceanography, science education, and quantitative biology.

The university offers the following degrees, majors, and special programs in this department:

  • Bachelor of Science in Wildlife and Conservation .
  • Bachelor of Science Environmental Science
  • Bachelor of Science in Biological Science (with or without Teacher Certification).
  • Bachelor of Arts in Biological Science (with or without Teacher Certification)
  • Minor in Environmental Science.
  • Minor in Biological Sciences
  • Interdisciplinary Minor in Biological Sciences with a Microbiology Specialization
  • Specialization in Biology for Interdisciplinary Studies Majors (Elementary Teacher Certification).
  • Specialization in Life or Earth Sciences for Interdisciplinary Studies Majors (Elementary Teacher Certification)
  • Master of Science in Biology (Thesis or Nonthesis).
  • Master of Education in Science with a Concentration in Biology or Earth Sciences
  • Minor in Biological Sciences or Earth Sciences for doctoral students majoring in supervision, curriculum, or instruction for higher education (See Doctor of Education degree programs, Department of Secondary and Higher Education.)

Pre-professional programs in medicine, allied health, pharmacy, dentistry, osteopathy, optometry, nursing, medical technology, and physical therapy are available.

While selection of new materials is based on recently-published materials in these LC classes, deselection (a.k.a. weeding) may be based on age, research value, physical condition, and use of existing materials. See Core policy for weeding criteria.

TYPES OF MATERIALS COLLECTED
The collection includes monographs, periodicals and other serial publications, statistical works, directories, and other standard reference works.

FORMATS OF MATERIALS COLLECTED/DELIVERY OF MATERIALS
The collection includes material in print, microform, compact disc, and online format. Although the bulk of the collection has traditionally been in print format, as cost and availability have been concerns, the collection has begun to move toward more electronic materials. With the exception of material collected solely for classroom instruction, no format is excluded if the material is relevant to the collection and if the library has the necessary technology in place.
