Admission Deadlines
A&M- Commerce has set varying admissions deadlines for incoming graduate, undergraduate freshmen (first year in college) and transfer students. If applying from outside the US, we strongly recommend that students apply much earlier than the published deadlines in order to obtain admission, collect visa application materials, and pay various visa-related fees before your visa interview. For more information on admission deadlines please go to Admissions.
Admission Process
Once a student has submitted all required documents for admission it takes the admissions office and academic department an average of 2-4 weeks to process the application and make a decision. Students may keep track of their admission in their myLeo account. Once admitted the admission file will be forwarded to the ISSO and we will review the file and issue the I-20, and email will be sent to the student to explain the process of issuing the I-20 as well as other important information. Once the ISSO receives the file from admissions, it usually takes an average of 7-10 business days to review the admission file and issue the I-20. After the I-20 is issued, we will send an email to the student notifying them and providing the SEVIS number so payment of the I-901 SEVIS fee may be made.
Mailing the Form I-20
Once the I-20 is issued, it will be sent via first class air mail. In the U.S., tracking service is not provided to first class air mail. First class air mail between the U.S. and foreign countries usually takes 7-14 business days. The actual delivery time varies by countries. Frequently, I-20’s may take longer than expected or may be lost in route so we strongly recommend students consider requesting the ISSO Express Mail the I-20 at the student’s expense. For alternate mailing options please click here. All email correspondence for alternate I-20 delivery must be sent to intl_stu@tamu-commerce.edu. When reserving the date for the visa interview with the U.S. consulate, please consider the mailing time for the I-20 and choose the date wisely. Once you have received the I-20 you will need to register for the mandatory international orientation at Forms.
Bringing a Dependent
An F-1 student's spouse or unmarried children under the age of 21 may be eligible to stay in the US with the F-1 student. To do so, these dependents must file for an F-2 visa. Before applying for a dependent to obtain F-2 status, the F-1 student should consider the additional financial responsibilities involved. F-2 dependents are not allowed to work or run a business of any kind. F-2 dependents are also restricted from attending any classes leading to a degree or profession al certification. If you are planning on bringing a dependent to the U.S., please contact an international advisor.
Concurrent or Dual Enrollment: Taking supplementary courses at A&M- Commerce
You may attend classes at A&M- Commerce and another institution at the same time. This is referred to as concurrent or dual enrollment. If you are considering concurrent enrollment, first verify with each school that the courses you are considering will transfer successfully. Then notify your International Student Office of your intent. The ISSO will tell you what type of documentation is needed to prove that your total course load between the two schools complies with visa regulations.
International students studying at our university with an A&M-Commerce I-20 who concurrently enrolls at another school must enroll in the majority of their semester credit hours at A&M-Commerce. Students who are studying in the U.S. with another school’s I-20 who concurrently enrolls at A&M-Commerce must take the majority of their semester credit hours at their current school. Non-A&M-Commerce international students who concurrently enroll for a majority of their semester credit hours at A&M-Commerce must have their SEVIS record and I-20 transferred to A&M-Commerce.
