1998 marked the first year of the Delmer Brown Scholarship Award.  Delmer was the head track coach and head athletic trainer for over 20 years at East Texas State University (now Texas A&M University-Commerce).  He coached the ETSU track and field teams to seven Lone Star Conference titles.  In 1964, he was the head athletic trainer for the USA track team in the Tokyo Olympics.  A Helms Foundation Hall of Fame Member, Delmer was named LSC Track and Field Coach of the Year in 1967 before retiring from coaching in 1977.  Delmer retired from ETSU in the Spring of 1980.  Through Delmer’s efforts, ETSU’s athletic training student program is one of the most progressive in the state.   Delmer was inducted into the ETSU Hall of Fame in 1983.  Delmer was also a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Hall of Fame.  Delmer passed away on May 1, 2003,  in Katy, TX.
