Floor Meetings - Their purpose, what to say, and how to set the tone
Each RA will lead at least 2 floor meetings throughout the course of the semester. Additional floor meetings are recommended to maintain communication between residents, to recognize positive community behavior, and to address inappropriate behaviors as needed.
- The first floor meeting must occur during the first week of classes.
- The second floor meeting must occur early December.
Topic- Semester Break, Final Exam Quiet Hours, etc.
Floor meetings have two purposes:
- Relaying important information to the residents.
- Creating a bond between the members of the floor.
In your first meetings with new students, in addition to covering policy and procedures, the role of the RA, and addressing community issues, you should also pass along important information about campus resources like meal times, library, health center, and recreation center hours, and information on academic issues such as registration, adding/dropping of classes, and withdrawals. This is also information that you can post on your bulletin board. PLEASE USE YOUR BULLETIN BOARD AND ESTABLISH IT AS THE INFORMATION SITE FOR YOUR SECTION!
Floor meetings are also an excellent time to inform your residents about campus events, activities and encourage new and returning students to get involved.
Stress the importance of reading the student handbook and all other information distributed through campus mail and by the RAs throughout the year. Returning students should never assume that all policies and other issues are the same as the previous year.
