Helpful Resources

On the following pages are a number of resources from the University and Commerce community which might be of help to the students to work with.  The list includes basic information which students might need about the University, such as Library and Health Service hours, and also identifies agencies and offices which have been established to assist students with matters or concerns, whether they are of an academic or personal nature.

All of these offices listed have been established because individual students frequently need to seek the advice or services provided.  Perhaps the RA might consider the ways representatives of these offices could be invited into the hall to provide educational programs for the residents.  The Placement Office could present a session on resume writing, Campus Security could present a rape prevention seminar- the possibilities are numerous!  Using these resources and thinking about the interest and needs of residents can lead to many programs which can assist residents in your area.

Academic Advising

All students are assigned an academic advisor who is a full-time faculty member.  Students who know the department in which they will major go to that department where they will be assigned an advisor.  Students who have not decided on a major should go to the Office of Academic Advising until a major is established.

Once a student is assigned an advisor in his/her major department, he/she will have that advisor until graduation or a change of major.  Until a student has filled a degree plan, he must consult with his advisor each semester about a schedule before registration.  An official plan will admit a student for registration.  The location and phone number for the different departments are as follows:

Things to do,  Places to go,  Sights to see

In Northeast Texas

In addition to the great variety of university-connected entertainment available to the public, such as sports events, plays, musical programs, MSC movies, and food festivals, there are many interesting things to do and see in the Northeast Texas area.  A brief sampling of these is listed here.

Trade Days

For the antique buff, or the browser, these events offer the thrill of discovering a bargain, or perhaps merely the enjoyment of  “looking around” at the myriad of items available.  Those listed below are held regularly, but other craft and trade fairs are held locally and in nearby towns at various times throughout the year.  You may want to create something or get rid of those odd collections around the house by “setting up shop” at one of these events.  Entry fees are usually nominal.

CANTON  held on the first Monday of each month as well as the prior weekend
KLONDIKE held on weekends
LADONIA held on the second Saturday morning of each month
BONHAM held on the second Sunday and prior Saturday of each month
MCKINNEY held on the third Sunday and the prior Saturday of each month
WHITEWRIGHT held on the Sunday before the fourth Monday and prior Saturday of each month
