Research Program

 

This program is intended for Community and Junior College students who are interested in science or mathematics and would like to experience research and discovery in their field

Students will arrive on campus on Sunday, June 5 and check into the New Pride Apartments. After a campus orientation, students will participate in a picnic with their mentors and spend the rest of the evening at the Morris Recreation Center.

The first week will be spent in research orientation. There will be research seminars by the faculty, hands-on instrument demonstrations and computer orientation and instruction. During this week the students will choose a Mentor and being individual instruction in their research area of interest.

In the remaining seven weeks, the students will spend their time performing research on their projects. Students will meet several times each week at lunch with one Mentor and all the Research at Undergraduate Institution students for

informal discussions. There will be weekly formal presentations by the Mentors and other participants. There will be scheduled instruction on the preparation of Powerpoint presentations.

In the evenings there will be scheduled times for movies on campus, evenings at the recreational center and other social events. The Mentors will be available on a rotating basis during the evenings.

Field trips to Al con Laboratories, Texas Instruments and UT Southwestern Medical Center are planned. This will give students the opportunity to see Science being practiced in several different environments.

On the last day of the program, students will present the results of their research at an extended seminar. Parents and the student's teachers are invited.
