Cost of Attendance

A college/university's cost of attendance is calculated as the sum of the following:

  • Tuition/Fees
  • Books/Supplies
  • Room and Board
  • Loan Fees (if applicable)
  • Travel Expenses
  • Miscellaneous Expenses
  • Dependent care costs (if applicable)
A student is awarded financial aid after determining need. Need is calculated as:

Cost of Attendance - EFC (Estimated Family Contribution)

The EFC or Estimated Family Contribution is calculated from the student's Free Application for Student Aid. The information provided by the student and/or parent is calculated according to federal methodology and the resulting EFC is generated onto a SAR or Student Aid Report. The student receives his/her SAR after applying for aid. The EFC is located on the top right hand side and can range between 0 to 99999.

The student is then awarded based on his/her eligibility.

For more information on calculating student need or awarding of student aid packages, see your financial aid office or contact the Department of Education at 1-800-4-Fed-Aid.
