The Doctor of Education Degree in
Supervision, Curriculum, and Instruction
Emphasis in Higher Education (SCIH)
(90 Semester Hour Program)

1. Major requires 36 semester hours (including dissertation hours) from the following:
      * HIED 528 Philosophy of Education
      * HIED 627 History of Education in the United States
      * HIED 656 Higher Education and the Law
         HIED 540 The American Community College
         HIED 541 The Community College Curriculum
         HIED 542 Analysis of Teaching in Higher Education
         HIED 621 Effective Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
         HIED 622 Internship
         HIED 637 Institutional Effectiveness and Outcomes Assessment
         HIED 650 Advanced Practicum in Supervision and Instruction
         HIED 651 Curriculum Development in Higher Education
         HIED 653 Fundamental Theories in Community College Instructional Leadership
         HIED 654 Seminar in Instructional Leadership
         HIED 655 Issues in Higher Education
         HIED 657 Finance and Governance in Higher Education
         HIED 658 Administration in Higher Education
      * HIED 710 Research Colloquium

2. 12 semester hours of research tools:
      6 semester hours of research methodology, (HIED 695* and 696)
      6 semester hours of statistics, (HIED 617 and COUN 613)

3. 12 semester hours of electives — No courses completed on the master’s degree may be counted; however, courses completed above the master’s may be considered if not more than ten years old when graduated.

*core courses

The student must complete 90 semester hours beyond the bachelor’s degree plus 12 hours of dissertation. (102 hours total)

A maximum of 12 hours taken before admission may be counted on degree.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS: Undergraduate overall GPA of 2.75 or 3.00 on the last 60 under-graduate hours or a 3.40 on all master’s work and beyond, completion of Doctoral Pre-Test, and an acceptable GRE score, vita and references.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS: Each student must complete 9 acceptable semester hours during two consecutive semesters on the Commerce campus. The Weekend College offers courses on Friday nights and Saturday mornings.
