General Information about Ethernet

Description

Ethernet is a method of connecting to the Internet that does not require phone lines or modems.  It is also considerably faster than using modems. Data transmission over phone lines is currently limited to 53kbps (or 0.053Mbps).  Using Ethernet, speeds of 10Mbps or even 100Mbps are possible (depending on the Ethernet card you have).  Your actual Internet download speeds will vary depending on the conditions of the network and the site.

Requirements

You will need to have a 10baseT or 100baseT Ethernet card with a RJ-45 connection installed in your computer and a patch cable to connect to the wall jack.  This is standard for all current Ethernet connections.  On the wall socket, the patch cable will connect to the blue jack (yellow for New Pride), and your phone cable will connect to the white jack.

You may need your Windows 95/98 CD or disks.

Setting up your Ethernet Card

  1. Follow the instructions for installing your Ethernet card.  These vary by card, and should be included.  Generally, this involves opening your computer, installing the card in a free space, and installing drivers.

  2. Double click on My Computer, and then on Control Panel and double click on Network.

  3. Select Add, then Protocol, and then press Add.

  4. Now select Microsoft on the left side, and TCP/IP on the right side.  Press OK to add this protocol.  TCP/IP is the protocol that is used for Internet related applications, including web browsers and E-mail software.

  5. The computer should now be back at the configuration tab.  The only things needed in this section are the Client for Microsoft Networks, your Ethernet adapter, and TCP/IP.  Other protocols, adapters or clients are not needed.

  6. Click on the Identification tab.  In the Computer name box, type a unique identification.  If you are uncertain as to what a good name would be, you could use your name.  Do not use spaces.  In the Workgroup box, you may type any “group” name you would like to associate with your computer, such as the name of your residence hall.

  7. Click OK on each open window until only My Computer and Control Panel are left open.

  8. Finally close all remaining windows and then restart your computer.

Congratulations

To test your Internet connection, run Internet Explorer from your Start menu.

You may use any web browsing software you like, including Netscape, Opera, Mozilla and many others.
