Confidentiality
ALL RECORDS ARE CONFIDENTIAL. All communication between student and
counselor will be held in confidence and will not be disclosed to any outside
agency unless the student gives written authorization. There are exceptions
to confidentiality, the most common are listed below.
Information is disclosed only with a student's written authorization, except:
- When a disclosure to a governmental agency is required
or authorized by law.
- When there is risk of imminent harm to self or others; and if there is reported abuse
of children, elderly, or the disabled.
- When a disciplinary decision has been made to refer a student,
and the student is aware that compliance with the referral is part of the
disciplinary procedures.
Students' records at the Counseling Center are NOT part of
their academic or administrative records. A students' records are NOT available
to ANYONE including parents, family, police, employers, faculty, or administrators
unless the student provides written consent.
The staff adheres to the ethical principles and code of conduct for counselors
as outlined by the American Counseling Association, the code of conduct for
Licensed Professional Counselors, and the code of conduct for psychologists
of the American Psychological Association.
