Course Description (from the Graduate Catalog): 543-544. Abstract Algebra. Three semester hours. Groups, isomorphism theorems, permutation groups, Sylow Theorems, rings, ideals, fields, Galois Theory. Prerequisite: Math 334.

The goal of the second half of the course (544) is to concentrate on Group, Ring and Field Theory.  This will lead to a study of ideals, polynomial rings and Galois Theory.  We will be starting in chapter 7 and moving through chapter 9 and then cover topics out of chapter 13 and 14.

Algebra is a subject that is a foundation for many useful applications in various fields.  It is important to have a firm understanding of the material to be able to apply it in different settings.

The way to learn Algebra is to immerse yourself in the problems.  I encourage you to help each other and form study groups to do this.  A majority of the course will be devoted to doing proofs and problems, either turned in or presented in class.  I will be assigning problems each class period and discussing problems from the previous class period.  It will be your responsibility to do these problems and get help when you need it.

I have an open door policy.  Feel free to ask for help anytime you see me in my office when you need it (even outside of office hours).

The grading will be as follows:

Homework and class presentations – 30%

                        Exams – 40%

                        Final Exam – 30%
