All About THEA
(formerly TASP)

What?

THEA (Texas Higher Educational Assessment) exam and the Success Initiative is an instructional program which ensures that each student attending an institution of higher learning in the state of Texas as well as students entering teacher certification programs show proficiency in the areas of reading, mathematics and writing.

Who?

You will have to take the THEA exam if you are a full-time or part-time student enrolled at a community college or a four-year institution or if you are planning to enter a teacher preparation program in the state of Texas. Possible exemptions:

  • Students who already hold a baccalaureate or higher degree.
  • High enough scores on ACT, SAT, or TAAS. (See Academic Advising for specifics.)
  • Non-degree or Certificate-only students.
  • Students enrolled temporarily--Students enrolled at a private institution of higher education or an out-of-state institution enrolling temporarily and plans to graduate from the private or out-of-state institution of higher education.

When?

Students MUST take the THEA prior to enrolling.

What if...

  1. I do not take the THEA prior to registration?

You will not be able to enroll or attend a Texas public college/university until THEA has been taken.

  2. I take the THEA and pass all three sections?

    Hooray!

  3. I take the THEA and do not pass a section?

Do not be overly anxious. Fully participate in the developmental education to improve your skills. Complete the developmental sequence prescribed for you by the university.
