11.04.99.R0.13 International Graduate Students

Supplements System Policy 11.04


1. An international student is considered to be any degree-seeking student holding a nonimmigrant visa. International students must submit all admission documents to The Graduate School a minimum of 90 days prior to date of the initial enrollment.

a. Each applicant must submit:

(1) An evaluation fee.

(2) Application for Admission to the Graduate School.

(3) Official transcripts translated into English, from each college or university attended. The bachelor’s degree earned at a foreign institution must be equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree.

(4) Proof of financial support (Student's sponsor must sign a notarized Sponsor's Statement form supplied by the University and provide a current bank statement.).

(5) Applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit proof of English proficiency, which is satisfied by one of the following:

a. a minimum TOEFL score of 500 for paper-based testing (p-BT), or 173 computer-based testing (c-BT) or 60 internet-based testing (i-BT); or

b. a minimum IELTS score of 5.0 overall band; or

c. completing all years of a Bachelor’s degree or higher at a U.S. regionally accredited university

(6) An official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score or, for business students, a Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) score.

(7) Proof of proper insurance (see d).

b. Each applicant is subject to departmental approval. Individual departments may establish additional requirements for admission.

c. Unless visa classification indicates otherwise, international students must be admitted to a degree program to enroll in graduate courses.

d. All international students are required to carry medical and repatriation insurance during any semester in which they are registered. No student will be permitted to register before he/she has purchased the University-approved policy or has shown proof of equal and continuing coverage provided through another carrier. Failure to comply with this regulation will result in withdrawal from the University.

2. New international students must bring their immigration documents with them to orientation. International students who hold F-1 visas are not eligible for nondegree status or provisional admission status.
