Veterans Educational Benefits (GI Bill)

The Office of Veterans Affairs serves as a liaison between the Department of Veterans Affairs and veterans and/or dependents who are receiving education benefits under the Montgomery GI Bill. In this role, the office is responsible for providing application information, monitoring and verifying course enrollments, and maintaining the records required to continue serving as an institution approved for the training of veterans.

Both undergraduate and graduate students who believe they may have educational benefits should contact this office before the beginning of the semester in which they intend to enroll so that applications for benefits or changes in programs can be submitted, and to insure that courses to be taken are required for completion of their educational objective (and, therefore, funded by the Department of Veterans Affairs).

More information about the procedures for using your benefits can be found Here.

Veterans may also contact the Veterans Affairs Regional Office by calling 1-888-442-4551 or use this link to visit the GI Bill Web Site for more information.

Hazlewood Tuition Exemptions

Certain Texas veterans (or veterans' dependents whose parent died while in service) who have no veterans educational benefits may be eligible for tuition exemptions under Texas legislation commonly known as the Hazlewood Act. This exemption is available to veterans who . . .

  1. no longer have eligibility for education and training benefits under a Veterans' Administration program,
  2. are currently residents of the State of Texas and were Texas residents at the time of entry into the armed forces,
  3. have an honorable discharge from the service (having served a minimum of 181 days on active duty), and
  4. are not in default of repayment of either a federal or state guaranteed loan.
To establish their eligibility, veterans must submit the following to the A&M–Commerce Veterans Affairs office:

Applications for this exemption, which also include more detailed information about eligibility requirements, can be found Here.
