Although we welcome your phone calls, and invite you to visit our office on campus, the following basic information is provided for your convenience (in case you cannot easily contact us in person).

1.             In order to receive Veterans’ Educational Benefits while attending Texas A&M University-Commerce—if you have not previously applied for the GI Bill—you
must submit one of the following:

New GI Bill - VA Form 22-1990 and a copy of DD 214

Reservist - VA Form 22-1990 and original of DD 2384 (Notice of Basic Eligibility)

Dependent - VA Form 22-5490 and a copy of your birth certificate (recommended)

VEAP - VA Form 22-1990 and a copy of DD 214

REAP - VA Form 22-1990, DD 214(s), and copies of all orders for the period(s) you will use to claim eligibility.

We suggest that you bring your application (and supporting documents)—unless you apply on-line—to the A&M-Commerce VA Office, let us make copies for your file, and mail the application for you to the VA Regional Office.

2.             If you have already been receiving VA educational benefits at another institution or in another program, you will need to complete a Request for Change
of Program or Place of Training
(VA Form 22-1995 for veterans or VA Form 22-5495 for dependents) and submit it to the A&M-Commerce Veterans
Affairs office when you register for classes.

3.             You must submit a “Request for Benefits” (gold card) to the A&M-Commerce Veterans Affairs office each semester that you are enrolled and want
                 to draw VA educational benefits.

4.           Important Veterans Administration and/or A&M-Commerce “Rules:”

  • ·         Be sure to let us know if you drop, add, withdraw, or change your major!

  • ·         VA will only pay for courses REQUIRED for completion of an approved degree.

  • ·         VA will NOT pay benefits for courses you have previously taken and successfully completed (passed).

  • ·         To be eligible for benefits you must be formally admitted to the university as a degree-seeking student within 30 days
of the end of your first semester of enrollment.

  • ·         To continue drawing benefits, you must file an official degree plan (degree evaluation) before you enroll for a third semester

  • ·         Correspondence courses will not be certified until the course is completed and recorded on your transcript.

  • ·         Advance payment requests will not be processed by A&M-Commerce.

  • ·         If you pre-register, we’ll submit enrollment certifications to VA 30-90 days before the next semester begins—so your checks won’t be delayed!

5.             The A&M-Commerce Veterans Affairs Office is not responsible for the disbursement of any money.  Contact the Veterans Affairs Regional Office
